By wearing non-light colored hats....seriously, you have to not fret over it....stuff happens...
Majority of my hats are light colored. The expensive ones I wear on special occasions & still get dings.
Most brush off or clean off with spot remover. The rest add character, at least in my mind....
3 in brim, I'd go soft like a dress hat. I have a few at 2 7/8 that work fine.
Anything wider, then I'd go western stiff.
Stiffening is done bad adding shellac, not glue. Shellac is not water soluble but does loose some with wet use. Reactivated by steaming.

Orvis, in the catalog, only shows a modern HatCo Stetson Stratoliner & a buffalo fur felt (more outback than fedora) along with some wool crushers.
LLBean still shows the Moose River hat by Stetson.
Cabelas has the 3 Forks by Stetson which is close to the Moose River & the Muzzle by Stetson...
A-2's I typically zip up just the bottom 1/4.
Half Belt & Highwayman I typically don't zip unless it is really cold & windy. They seem to drape better unzipped.
I have quite a few hats, modern factory models, that I've "unglued" the liner. A few of my customs I ordered without the liner attached.
The liner does hold body heat more so than no liner.
I simply tuck the liner behind the sweatband when cooler temps come around.
