Can someone explain the half-belt style jacket to me. It slimming and all, but what's it designed for? An A2 or a Perfecto, I understand where they're coming from; but with a half-belt, I'm totally clueless. Grouse hunting? The reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking about a colder weather...
When I see a reference to wool lining, is this what we're talking about? Am I correct in understanding that this is less warm than alpaca? Does is go: shearling, short shearling, alpaca, wool as pictured, then even less warm. Where does quilting come in on this??
It's fair to assume that if you were going to get in a plane and maybe not come back, you'd have a different take on stuff like that. To me, the hanging strap represents that mindset.
Of course I'm right: I'm always right! (quoting Victor R. Gook the patriarch of my favorite old time radio show, "Vic and Sade").
My gift to you: check out episodes 211, 218, 221 and 223 on the link below. "You'll have so much enjoyment, you'll never forget it!"

I kid you not. I seriously think you should open it Saturday. It's not fair to compare it to other presents, because that's really not what it is. If I was your son or brother and I gave you a nice gift for the holidays, I'd be a little bent out of shape if it was held up in any way next to...
I recently learned of Filson here and am intrigued with these vests as a base layer under a leather jacket (especially on a bike). I don't have a problem with a Patagonia/Polartec style fleece vest and a fellow FL'er suggested a Patagonia down base layer. I'm just curious about these vests. I...
I think it's gorgeous with a spot on fit, too. But I still wanna know what do you think about it? I always like to hear the backstory. What you were thinking when you got it? What ecological niche is it going to fill in your jacket trousseau? What are your big plans for it? I really like...
I was thinking of a motorcycle jacket with a shearling lining but Alan dissuaded my by saying that it would be just too physically heavy; impractically so.
After all this build-up, I expect pix of the wrapping being torn, your face the instant you see the jacket, you outside in the jacket and your p.j.'s etc.
You owe us.
I couldn't help myself.
Also, I don't really understand the whole "thickness of the hide" concept. Alan gave me a sample of the leather he used and, when you compare it to the finished jacket, it seems like nothing.
I don't know why you have to torture yourself (but if it makes you happy there's a "Mr. S" URL on my thread).;) P.S. I made a few decisions and am going to call Alan about my project. Meanwhile, WHAT'S IN THAT BOX??? If you want to drive yourself crazy that's one thing, but to post and leave...
I'm not crazy about straps on the side, although I know a lot of jackets have them. I had them on an Enfield I sold. I think thing the more circumference covered by the belt, the more the bunching effect is distributed. The only jacket where I really like the side belts is a Highwayman type...
I'm considering one more decidedly warm jacket for on and off the bike. (You east coast guys have a different thermostat than me. When it's in the 50's I'm ready for shearling.) I think when I put on a leather jacket, it's usually zipped (at least at the bottom); but sometimes I'll wear it...
The pic is from "Born to Run;" but this isn't about Bruce worship. I'm not even a fan. I was just wondering if anyone on a custom jacket, and not necessarily a Perfecto/biker type, ever had the wrist zips put in on the outside. I think it's sort of old fashioned and kind of decorative...
