    Tasers, Airplanes and Health Insurance

I remember a student bringing a gun to my high school in 1965. In fact it was several guns. Loaded. And he shot them. With the school's blessing. Demonstrating a ballistics tank he built to catch bullets for comparison was his science fair project. At that time no one thought too much...

    Modern Stetson Open Road

I just received a Stetson Open Road off eBay claiming to be "vintage". I have absolutely no idea when it was made (and didn't ask as I was just getting it to play with). I already had an OR that I bought new back in the 80's and they are not the same hat really. For example, the one from the...

What was that first jacket that started it all?

The G1 I was issued in the Navy in the 60's.

    Facebook anybody?

I felt like you right up to the point that my kid was in a predatory situation and the switch got flipped. It's hardwired in the safety position now. At least on this matter.

    Facebook anybody?

I would vote no. I had to deal with a predator situation with one of my kids long before there was such a thing as Facebook and my kid was 15 at the time. Today's social networking sites make it even easier for your kids to come into contact with people they really shouldn't. Unless you're...

What old fashioned traditions do you have for Christmas???

At our house, decorations go up the week before Christmas and come down New Year's Day. We'll have eggnog on Christmas Day. With a fair amount of Nog in it. Now that we're the grandparents, family comes for dinner and we cook enough for at least twice as many people as we need to.

Vintage professions you'd like to see come back.....

It's not so much that I want to see particular professions come back as it's that I'd like to see the economic and societal conditions that allowed those professions to exist at all come back.

Another reason to wear natural fibers - formaldehyde!

Various odd things have stuck with me over the years, like (from Navy boot camp) "Until it's been washed, it's dirty."

Looking for tall laced boots which are useful for hiking/hunting

Carolina lineman boots, perhaps? http://www.shoeshackonline.com/site/623303/product/923 I have a pair of these and I can say that they are both very tough boots and not a lot of fun to wear all day long. Hiking boot they aren't.

Tipping the mail carrier: a thing of the past?

Maybe minimum wage in Oz, but here pay is pretty good for a postal carrier: http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=United_States_Postal_Worker_%28Carrier%29/Hourly_Rate

Have the cowboy movies brainwashed me?

Fascinating pictures. Thanks for the link. Got me to thinking about why the movies seem so inaccurate as to western hats. Pure speculation on my part: Hats did seem to change into more modern styles after about 1900. Western movies really got going in the 1930's. I'm guessing that most...

    Hats or Shades

Sunglasses protect your eyes against UV radiation. Hats don't. Unless you wear one covering your face :) Too much exposure to UV over time can contribute to cataracts. Same with pilots. Less atmosphere to shield against UV at flight altitudes. A hat will help protect your skin from UV...

Tipping the mail carrier: a thing of the past?

When I was a teenager in a small town (early 60's) there were really only 2 mail carriers in town. And they walked their routes and put the mail in the mailbox on your front porch. Plus a couple of RFD carriers and the postmaster (whose son I went to school with). They'd all been working for...

Strange Superstitions and The Superstitious Among Us

Not particularly superstitious myself but once had a co-worker who was and also scared of snakes. Since he was a practical joker I got even one day by placing a rubber snake in his desk, hanging around the door to his office until he saw it and then opening an umbrella and setting it on the...

    Akubra Campdraft

All those pics of the BGCD finally got to me. Ordered one yesterday and I'm now waiting out Akubra filling the custom order. I'm told it will probably be March before the order is filled and shipped.

What kind of hat might look good on my noggin?

I have a Taupe Fawn Campdraft and a Moonstone Sylemaster. I really like them both. They are two quite different hats. The Campdraft came open crown and was quite easy to bash. It's a softer felt than the Stylemaster, just plain feels better to my hands and on my head. It is a larger hat in...

    Akubra Campdraft

At lunch today two guys at the next table were eyeballing my Campdraft sitting on a chair. As I got up to leave one asked me where I bought it (HatsDirect) and they both made notes about where and what the style was called. Probably won't be too long before there are another couple of...

    decoding the looks

No offense intended to anyone, but I think that once you get over being self conscious wearing a hat you don't notice that anyone looks at you in your hat any more than you notice them looking at you when you aren't wearing one.
