did men shave their heads in the golden era?

The real reasons for short hair in the military are for hygiene and for proper seal on chemical and biological protective equipment. By hygiene I mean for dealing with lice and such while in the field. Head injuries are common in combat and short hair also makes it easier to deal with that...

Forum Upgrade -- POST ANY ISSUES HERE

One of the things I think I'm seeing is that when you mark a forum read it's no longer taking you automatically back to the list of forums. Didn't it do that before the upgrade?

    Post-Apocalyptic Films of the 80's

    Pre 80's (1975), but I liked A Boy and His Dog. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072730/

What cigar (or pipe) did you smoke today?

Part of a Henry Clay. A real dog rocket. Wouldn't stay lit, began to come apart at the burn. Unpleasant all around.

    Argh! DIY Advice?

I think that article was aimed at the kind of person who doesn't do their own repairs as a way to make them feel good about not knowing how. After all, if you can say it costs more to repair than replace you don't look like such an incompetent. For those of us who do maintain our own stuff...

Does anyone wear a sharkskin suit anymore?

I had a brown/gold sharkskin suit back in the late 60's that I really liked - then. I don't know that it was Rat Pack Shiny, but it was shinier than most people would wear today. Not really what you'd call a conservative suit.

    Does Anyone Drink Rye Whiskey?

I don't think Jack Daniels is a rye whiskey per the U.S. legal definition, which requires the mash to be at least 51% rye. Jack Daniels has only 12% rye in the mash and is really a sour mash whiskey (per Jack Daniels). In fact, if you tour the distillery in Lynchburg they are pretty firm about...

    The Preppy Handbook... Returns!

Oh well, I guess I'm back to being an alien. [huh] I think there's a another class, but I'm not sure where to place them. I'm talking about computer and techie geeks of all types who basically aren't interested very much in possessions other than techno toys. They're probably really...

    The Preppy Handbook... Returns!

Interesting book, but somewhat dated. I felt like I was reading about aliens until I got to the last chapter.

WWII attitudes to conscription and going into the service

I think he was addressing the civil rights issue of recruits. And why drill sergeants do what they do. And always have. And pretty much always will. Those who have experienced it know.

What cigar (or pipe) did you smoke today?

Good luck with your enterprise. You might want to look at the Smoke Eaters here: http://www.purennatural.com/fs.php?center=smoke-eaters/smokeeater.php All sizes and prices. Something there just might be appropriate. I don't have any direct experience with those types of units myself...

    Octoberfest/Oktoberfest in the US

I played tuba in a German band here for around 14 years. I can say that with the exception of the actual Germans in the audience most people wouldn't have known or really cared much about the distinction between Bavaria and the rest of Germany. What our customers cared about was drinking some...

    Anyone play Bridge?

Only tried bridge a few times many years ago, but never really found others who wanted to play. I did play a lot of double deck Pinochle once upon a time. These days it's more likely to Mah Jong with my wife and her family.

    The Preppy Handbook... Returns!

Whether you're a preppie or not depends on whether you are dressing up (not preppie) or dressing down (preppie). If you're popping your collar you're probably just an (expletive deleted). :)

Self Help Books in the 1950s

The Dale Carnegie books were the first thing to pop into my mind. I remember my parents having some of those around the house in the 50's.
