Unless you're looking at an open crown hat, the height refers to the creased height.
More pedantically, there is no such thing as an "unbashed" or "uncreased" height on a hat which has a blocked in crease.
As somebody who wasn't really satisfied until I got my Optimo Dillinger, I definitely sympathize with you.
If the Optimo piques you, I'm sure you won't regret the purchase.
If you don't mind spending the cash for an Optimo, you will not be disappointed in the end result, especially if you take the time for an in person visit. All their components are top notch. Their consistency of the dye colors in particular is one of Optimo's strengths, IMHO, as well as some of...
Mr. Bowers would be the definitive judge.
Unless the pictures are deceiving me, I see a clear plastic covering over the liner. IIRC, these are more common in 60's hats, and maybe started showing up in the late 50's. Earlier hats typically would have an oilskin covering over the top part of the...
It's worth what somebody will pay for it.

I picked up Knudsen's version a few months ago, which they advertise as 4 1/4" tall. It's a nice hat to have in the rotation.

Also the only bidder on this flange for a future refurb project...
Every facet of Optimo's operation is top notch. Tiffani is a gem and really knows her stuff. Their felts are sourced from wild furs and processed by FEPSA in Portugal. Other makers also source from FEPSA, but Optimo gets exclusive color runs. And their colors are gorgeous. I'm currently coveting...
Christy's did have a reputation for being somewhat averse to moisture (as in, would shrink if hit by rain). I own an Adventurer, which has a nice color, blockshape, and well-done finishing. The tacking stitches are fairly obvious, but on par for modern production hats. I've never dared get it...
