Dobbs "Gay Blade"

Last weekend at an estate sale I found a hat just like this one! Same fawn color and whip-stitching. In excellent condition. It was marked Wormser and on the band was imprinted "Gay Cavalier" not "Gay Prince." A knock-off of the Gay Prince? Anyone know anything about Wormser? Unfortunately the hat I have is too small for me. Looking at trying to have it strectched but could be interested in a trade...

I'm glad this thread came back to the top again. I've never come across a Gay Blade before and this is a stunning looking hat.

I hope JTL heads back this way soon, I miss seeing the hats in his great collection.

Bob R - Wormser has a thread here at the lounge where you can see some examples: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?53211-Wormser-Way-Into-Your-Heart

You can post some pics of yours there too. The links are broken in the first couple of pages, unfortunately.

Yeah, enforcement of 'intellectual property' sure has changed from then to the Apple/Samsung case. Stetson also made a Gay Prince clone called the Tiajuana (or maybe it was in the Tiajuana line) as well.

Yes interesting hat. Great whipstitch. I think it definitely is a Dobbs Gay Prince. I like the telescope crown. Stetson and Knox made copies of it I believe.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!;)

Just won this Dobbs on the 'Bay:

Looks quite "Whippet-esque," and love the color combo. Can't wait for this to arrive...

Cheers,

Hello, I am new here and trying to figure out if the hat I own has any value? It looks very similar to the hat in this picture...It is a Dobbs and is printed in gold "Gay Blade". Any idea of a value? Thank you in advance Matt

It's worth what somebody will pay for it.

In all seriousness, a nice, fresh, vintage hats can net you a coupla hundred bucks if you find the right buyer. A lot of hats don't sell for that much. The size and condition of your hat are unknown to us, therefore it is impossible to give you any sense of what it might sell for. A 6 7/8 hat? Not so much.

Thank you for the insight! It is a great vintage hat! 7 1/8. I have yet to find/see one that is a "Gay Blade"... It came with a really old red Dobbs hexagon box... I'm still unsure if I want to sell it. I am trying to narrow down a year it was made.

Greetings Blatz:
Welcome to the lounge. You have a very nice hat there. It’s looks to be in very, very nice condition. It is distinctive in the color contrasting ribbon, brim binding. Way cool. It also is a pretty seldom seen model i believe. Heck, the box is even in great shape. You got a winner there. I’d wear the heck outta it. Other’s can chime in on the age but you’re not far off with the late 40s-50s i believe.
What’s it worth? It’s worth keeping that’s for sure.
Be well. Bowen
