Looking Forward to 2011? Vintage Aspirations for next year?

I want to lose 10-20 lbs. so I can get back to sewing my own clothing. I've stopped because of a weight gain and being unsure how to size up at the weight I am now. It's only one size, but it's still annoying. So that's both a modern and a vintage aspiration.

Which is your favorite Golden Age movie studio

The majour studio that captures my heart most would be Warner Bros. From what I've seen of Paramount, they would most likely win my heart also, but since they don't give a rat's behind about their old products I will never know. I'm also a huge fan the "poverty row" studios, like Monogram...

Keepers of the Culture of The Greatest Generation

I also like to know that WHYs of the "Greatest Generation" and ALWAYS look at it in the proper context. Even though I'm happy to live in the 2000s, I don't think they are superior to any other time period. I just think of it this way -- 2010 will be laughed at as "quaint" in another few years...

Vintage professions you'd like to see come back.....

In South jersey there is a butcher shop that is always crowded. All gas stations in NJ are full-service. It's illegal to pump your own. There was a "shoe repair" 2 miles down the road from me (in NJ) well into the early 2000s! (It's a Dunkin Donuts, now) NJ diners offer good "hangouts"...

    Unpopular movie opinions...

Tons of silent movies were remade into talkies. Off the top of my head: The Show Off (1926) became Men Are Like That (1930) Love em & Leave em (1926) became The Saturday Night Kid (1929) And The 1940s Maltese Falcon was actually made ealier in 1931 under the title Dangerous Female...

    Show us your hair do's....

Ruby, my husband and I were scrolling and we both stopped and said "Wow! She looks just like Kelly Bundy (Christina Applegate)!" even before we read the next comment. The resemblance is uncanny!

What is your favorite decade in film?

I love the 1930s. Of course I love the decades before that, too, but 1930s is the pinacle of filmmaking in my opinion. The decade started out with creaky early talkies, the early 30s gave us some of the sexiest films ever until the fascinating Production Code of 1934. Then after the 1934...

    wearing vintage or inspired

I make my own vintage from original vintage patterns. I don't like real vintage. Most of it is too plain for my tastes and I don't like the idea of wearing something that may rip with any movement. I don't even collect vintage clothing and sold what I had on etsy. I buy new stuff. Even...

Do you say Goodbye on the 'phone?

Everyone says Hello and Goodbye on the phone that I know. Movies are the last thing I take cultural cues from. *shrugs*

"Thirty Things that Need to Stage a Comeback"

I remember "Music" class in grade school. Once a week we'd go to Mrs. Permito's classroom where she would have her piano set up. We'd all get dittos (!!) of the songs and we'd sing along. Sometimes they were old standards, other times they were current pop hits. We learned all the notes in...

Golden Era songs with off-color subjects.

I found that naughty little ditty I couldn't remember in a previous post in this thread. It's called "Something To Remember" by UNKNOWN. It's not X-rated nor does it use any bad language, but it does raise the eyebrows!! :D Here it is along with a few other "party records"...

Does 'beauty' always have to refer to women?

Huh? I don't understand. You can appreciate our hairdos and makeup all you want. I just would hate to see this section become unisex because I like to find inspiration here. I would hate to have to wade through men's threads to find the women's -- let's face it, there are way more men here...

Does 'beauty' always have to refer to women?

This I enjoy these two rooms being female-majority. Why do the guys need to take over our rooms when just about EVERY other room is especially for them?

Question about movie distribution and viewing in "the day"

Here's a question: I know before the Production Code each state had different censorship laws. Did the indivdual theatre chop up the films?
