Does 'beauty' always have to refer to women?

Does "beauty" always have to refer to women? If so, does this mean that a separate category (Not For Ladies Only) might be added for "handsomeness?"

I prefer to think of the term "beauty" as all-encompassing, and I resent being made to feel like a voyeur for appreciating haircuts and such.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

I always thought the beauty section of the Lounge wasn't so much about the appreciation of beauty, but the discussion of how to achieve it.

If you have any advice about hairdos (& some male hairdressers have contributed) please do so. :D

Aren't there threads about mens haircuts in the general attire thread? At any rate, I thought the Powder Room was the only place where men aren't welcome.

OK - to weigh in here. To me this is a section about beauty as in "grooming" and as such should apply to all BUT as there have been issues in the past with chaps coming in and making salacious comments the area was made women only (I'm assuming here, a bartender can tell me if I'm wrong). Is there a male grooming section? I've never noticed. Might make sense though.

There is no reason to resent anything.

This is a direct cut and paste from the Beauty area FAQ.

3. Men with an interest in women's fashions of the era are welcome to post in most threads in the PR and Beauty, with the exception of those topics dealing with lingerie or other intimate matters, but please don't abuse this privilege with inappropriate comments. Men are guests here, so please behave in a gentlemanly manner.

The bartenders reserve the right to designate any thread as "Women Only," and any posts by men in such threads will be summarily deleted.

Which basically means, unless we are talking unmentionables or other -very- specifically girl things......men are welcome to chime in to threads as long as they remain polite and mannerly, which should be a given all over the Fedora Lounge, but sadly has to be restated from time to time when people don't act in a mannerly way.

A "Barber Shop" section for manly grooming would be a very nice thing to have around the Lounge, a place where the fellas could read the Police Gazette and listen to the horse races and and argue about hot lather and such. But until we get one, they're welcome to post on such subjects in this section. But they better not complain when we offer to give them makeovers.

Right now all mens grooming threads are in the general attire section of the lounge. There has been talk of a barber shop section. Considering the fellas have most of the lounge already, I dont think two rooms set aside for the ladies is too much to ask for.

Well, to get back to the over all question of what we really mean by "Beauty", and does it only apply to women, I would toss in my JFK Jr story. I used to work in Tribeca, very near where he lived. One summer day I found myself walking down the street a few paces away from him. I have to say, he was the most beautiful man I ever saw. Not just handsome, but beautiful. I just sort of shook my head, thinking what a burden the man had to carry, not just his family heritage, but looks that made you stare, even as a straight male.

I don't think "beauty" just applies to women either.

I think my husband has the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen ( I may, of course, be a little biased) and I always call him my beautiful boy.

With regards to the placement of female grooming threads, would the blokes really be that interested anyway?

I used to see him a lot at the NYAC and he was as striking as any model or actor you'll see. Just out of college he approached an actor friend of mine with the thought of getting into the business. They had a few lunches/dinners but nothing ever came of it. Me thinks Jackie put the kibosh on it and sent him off to law school.

beautiful and handsome

I may be missing the point of the original poster but here is my 2 cents.

I usually use beauty for all sorts of things. If my friend restores an old car, he may drive it over and ask "well, what do you think?" If I like it I might say "she's a real beauty!" This also goes for horses and gun, of course.

That being said, I've seen really, really cute girls wearing a driving cap or tweed jacket and have commented "now that is a handsome jacket."

I don't consider myself particularly good looking, but if someone were to comment on my looks, I would consider being "handsome" a more appropriate comment than me being "beautiful." To me, something is handsome if it's a little more rugged, perhaps with some of the patina worn off. To me, when something is beatuiful, it's a little more gracile or fragile.

I remember in anthropology we were looking as some beautiful, gracile australopithecus africanus bones. They were both beautiful and gracile.

This

I enjoy these two rooms being female-majority. Why do the guys need to take over our rooms when just about EVERY other room is especially for them?

and I agree that this room should not be turned into a uni-sex room topically....

I was only pointing out the rules to say 'if he wants to come in and discuss bob hairdo's on -women- with us...there is no rule against it, as long as good behavior happens'

Two different things those...

Hey, sorry if I stuck a stick in a hornet's nest. I have no problem being excluded from certain "rooms." Nor do I wish to horn in on female territory. A few times in the past, though, I've enjoyed looking at you women in this section, appreciating the hairdos and whatnot. Somehow I felt like an interloper, and that feeling is what led to my original question. I'll gladly back quietly out of the room if asked.

Huh?

I don't understand. You can appreciate our hairdos and makeup all you want. I just would hate to see this section become unisex because I like to find inspiration here. I would hate to have to wade through men's threads to find the women's -- let's face it, there are way more men here than women.

I also don't want to hear any "Whoa, you're hot!" comments in a womens' area from men. Inappropriate and creepy. I'm sure a few other gals would concur.

Other than that, guys can contribute if it's useful. And by all means, please admire! :)

Nothing wrong with a very good looking straight man being called 'gorgeous' or beautiful', especially by his woman! I say this about my Mister, and he is the most blatantly heterosexual, masculine man I've ever met.
