That must have been a great experience Stearmen! I read "Black Cats and Dumbos" by Mel Crocker about PBY's in WWII and the chapter about flight ops in the Aleutians (with the atrocious weather conditions) was the most compelling reading in the entire book.
I had a US A jacket (A-2) afew years ago. I agree with Doctor Strange's assessment; overall a nice jacket with thick HH (which I like), great knits and a heavy duty cotton lining. Not the most accurate but a good buy for the price. The only fault with mine was that the zipper broke after 6...
I've heard that stocks of unissued WWII jackets were stamped with the "USN" after the war to bring them up to the new Navy specs of the new 1950's G-1 jackets. Not 100% certain, but that could explain the unusual USN stamping your jacket has on it's windflap.
Hello DT; I've got a BK M-422 jacket and it's awesome! Perfect fit and very high quality craftsmanship. Good choice, if I can offer my 2 cents. Best of luck with the new jacket.
The best thing to do is ask for samples. Much better then assessing the quality by just looking at website photos (Aero is a good example of web pics not doing the actual jacket justice).
There are lots of photos of Navy flight crews in sheepskin M-444/445 winter jackets but that style didn't really grab our attention the way Irvin's and B-3's did. Maybe a PBY Catalina in the Aleutians isn't as "sexy" as a B-17 in England and it's the mystique of RAF Spitfire pilots and 8th Air...
The A-2 was intended as a summer/warm weather flight jacket. The G-1 (M-422a in WWII) was an "intermediate" flight jacket. Both the Army Air Force and the Navy also issued winter/cold weather (sheepskin) flying gear to flight crews.
I'm with you Dr. H; I've got the same olive/khaki BR N-1 and its a great jacket for the cold/windy/snowy weather we're getting here in the States. The perfect grab-and-go cold weather jacket. Top quality!
Just to get back to the original thread, I love the Irvin (had an ELC about 10 years ago which I sadly sold) and the D-1 is nice; my personal favorite is the U.S. Navy M-444 sheepskin jacket.
I am very interested to see the new one that Eastman will roll out this coming fall. Just my 2 cents...
LOL! You speak-um the truth Kemo Sabe! Tonto has-um good job and fine jackets! Me one lucky injun!
Keep warm Worf and enjoy this leather weather my friend :-)
Can I borrow that grain of salt, Worf? The whole state seems out of rock salt and another big storm is going to hit tomorrow. Thanks partner!
Love that redskin D-1 btw!
