The reason it struck me as an inspector stamp is that in upper range westerns I find inspector names. Some stamped and on more recent ones it was a paper label. N. Hughes inspected the 30X Resistol I'm wearing today.
One more thing to add to the list of things that make you go HMMMMMMMMM....
If the records were ever discovered the order numbers found on many of these gems might be of use. For this hat, the trail starts at the factory store but for others without seller's stamp or a date, this could tell us things.
I tried to catch it in one of those pics. "-1954" is clear but the rest of the date is very faint but looks like "FEB 8".
This is one of those no name hats. The name "Devon" is on the tag but it is not described as anything else but a 3x quality. No Sovereign, 1st Quality, etc.
The oilskin...
More examples to ponder....
I received this new to me hat from Ebay seller.
Looks to be in terrific shape with little wear time but issues from being stored stacked inside another hat. Nothing a little SLC (steamy loving care) won't fix...
Very interesting thread.
I was in Bologna, Milan, Modena, Assisi and a few other nnorthern Italy towns in fall of 2002 and I was wearing my Peter's Bros black raw edge, 1 inch ribbon fedora and I got lots of compliments and questions from people on the street and in most all places I visited...
Pearl and Moselle sound like QC inspectors, would they dare name such fine headwear those names? No disrespect for any of the Ladies (or men) out there with those fine names, just do not think they suggest a style of men's hats.
I often get chided for using "ink pen" or "fountain pen" to describe a ballpoint pen device.
I use this to differentiate between a felt tip or other newer writing instrument.
I know "fountain pen" is wrong as that is another animal but I heard that my whole youth.
I tire of "at this point...
button up shirts that have some design or printing on them in a randon location or locations. Priniting looks like the shirt was laid upon something printed before the ink dried. I've seen this on plain shirts as well as plaid or striped.
I sure don't get it!
Looks like the place where Mad Men shop. Well sort of, I know real Madison Ave execs probably had haberdashers who came to them measured and then delivered and fitted their suits.
It is definitely more for the marker aspect. I have made the mistake of dusting one of my silver bellies with a brush or sponge that had been used on black hats and it leaves a dark trace. Some blacks are still dyed with a grease and transfer of that to a light hat is really a bad thing.
I have come up with circumference measurements that are accurate for the hat size (verified by being a hat that fits me and I know my size) a couple of ways.
1. use a cloth tape and carefully run it around circumference.
2. use a piece of string and run it around carefully then meaure.

I am periodically amazed at hat auctions where the size is listed in the form, "6 3/4 inches by 8 1/4 inches"!
DUHH!
That sure tells me a lot.
I have seen questions asked about circumference and it is answered in that form.
Double DUHH!!
OK, I know there is no qualifying sellers...
The 1000 foot race track is applied to tracks without an adequate run out length. The cars need a braking area and the tracks that do not have a long enough area by the new rules (I can't cite the length but I believe it is 3000+ feet) have to run the abbreviated length.
Locking torque converter eliminates that and many car makers use the clutch partially applied to overcome TC losses in lower gears when TC is not usually locked for even more TC loss reductions..
I am a multiple dozens manual transmission owner and favor them significantly but the EPA mpg...
Manual transmission powertrains are harder to get qulified for emissions these days and the fuel economy advantage once held by manuals is not true today. Electronically controlled automatics will shift at more appropriate rpm and thus yield better mpg than most of us could achieve with a manual.
Fore-aft I usually go with level or the slightest bit tilt up from browm.
Left-right my noggin holds a hat a faint amount lower on right unless I get fussy and look inmirror and adjust it.
I think the answer to this unique to you and your face. Some wide faced persons may look less than cowboy with anythingunder 4inch and may look most ideal with a 4 1/2 inch or even more. A slim person wearing indentifiable western crown shape with a 3 inch brim may look to be completely in his...
LOL, mag in the freezer! Not in this lifetime would my sig. other tolerate that.
I guess I am lucky that I live in a Monarchy that at least tolerates my hat addiction (may have a lot to do with my tolerating saddles stored in house and the fact that I shoe the prize ponies...)
Two new ones
Here are a couple I scoredon OFAS in the last while.
