This is great. Does the crown label "Giuseppe e. Fratello" call out an era before the battle of the cousins? c.1900?? I don't remember seeing it before but haven't checked the many pages here.
I was going to say that it was the finest montecristi I have seen... but after looking more closely, I still think you found a swell hat. I also have that deeply printed liner - a beauty.
A young man's hat made by Knox and sold in Gimbels department store in NYC. I am feeling like a young man today on what would have been my parent's 74th wedding anniversary.
Could certainly be... with an odd French twist. There are also "French" hats that were made in the USA. I have one though I've forgotten what the branding is. All is fair in love and trade wars.
Eagles have a symbolic tradition in French culture. This French gold pin has a similar presentation as the mark in your hat:
The origin of the eagle and shield that adorns the old US Senate chamber is fuzzy, but it is described as being in the French tradition.
Hi Terry,
I hope one in your size crosses your path. The first Borsalino I found many years back was a later production - 1970s I think - a late offering from old factory. The liner was no longer the raw silk variety and the sweatband was sewn with a reed, but the felt had much of the quality...
Thank you guys. Borsalino, to my mind and head, made the most enjoyable iteration of the Open Road style - soft, formable, impeccably finished. I love each of my thin ribbons. Just love the Borsos a little bit more.
Hello Carl... thanks for your note. That hat and virtually all of my others) was found on eBay. The silver milan was quite popular in the mid to later 1950s. I've seen them from all the major makers in a very similar construction and style.
Jim, I'm not sure I ever saw or replied to your message. Sorry that it's three years later! Would love to see that painting. My uncle Nat was born around 1903. He was a student at the Art Student League. I would think he painted from the 1920s to the late 1970s. He passed away in the 1980s.
Our younger daughter came home for a bit to shelter in place with her parents. She found this photo from 2018 on her phone which had us both rolling on the floor laughing. I thought I’d share it in a new thread reserved for those FL photos that might otherwise have remained on the cutting room...
