My Alpha G-1 is real short, almost fits like a B-15. The Cockpit was almost perfect. A U.S. Authentic will arrive here Tuesday. Based on the data, it should have a nice "military" fit. I will give a full report in a dedicated thread. If it does not fit, I may send it back and have them make a...
I think the Wings G-1 is underrated somewhat. Probably the best constructed of all my jackets. But curious as to why they made it longish? I am a regular size 40 - 42. This jacket is a 44. Two inches shorter, it would be my favorite.
Oh yes...I have the full flight suit in nomex, plus the underwear ( top / bottoms / socks). My P-51 pilot friend wears nomex racing shoes (and a helmet). I am looking for some good leather boots. Bought a real nice pair from Chippewa, but could not get my foot into the boot because I have a high...
After being advised by my P-51 Mustang owner/pilot friend that nomex would be a wise decision, I found a nice example on the Bay. The Cockpit Authentic MA-1 was purchased to wear while flying my Mustang, but now nomex will be the jacket of choice, unless I'm wearing the leather A-2, of course...
I am tempted to give this one a try. I know it is a HEAVY jacket, as I own their A-2. Yes, it's cowhide (nothing wrong with that). And the collar is synthetic. But at $217 for a well made jacket, made in the USA by Excelled, and free shipping, how can you go wrong? And I think they even offer...
I am familiar with one fatal accident involving a 2/3 scale Mustang about 2 years ago. But I think it was a case of an airplane that was beyond the capability of the pilot.
There have been several P-51 Mustang crashes in the last couple years, all fatal. The most recent was in Phoenix, AZ (Big...
Being long is my biggest gripe. It would hang (drape?) much better if an inch or so shorter. The sleeves are long also. My Cockpit G-1 (sold) was a much nicer (more flattering) fit. Let me get some close ups of the grain.
Is real always better than fake? I have a B-15 (fake), and 3 G-1's (real). One G-1 collar feels course, and is not comfortable on the back of my neck.
The fake collar is plush, and silky smooth. Hard to tell it from the real ones.
Full scale size requires a full scale budget. A 3/4 scale P-51 will run 200K plus. That extra 25% will set you back 1 million plus. Ask me how I know...
Operating costs for a typical warbird (P-51) is $1300 - $1400 per hour. A Mustang, Spitfire, or P-40 Warhawk will burn one gallon of 100...
Interesting. My US Wings G-1, size 44R, has a shoulder span of 18.5". And P to P is 22".
My G&B A-2 has a shoulder span of 20". It actually fits very nice, not baggy at all.
I have two cowhide (G&B - Excelled) and three goat (Cockpit - US Wings - Alpha) jackets. The goat does feel a bit softer, but not that much. The cowhide has a much more pronounced grain pattern.
Also in my closet are two old (very old) jackets, one from Wilsons and one from American Leather...
I have cowhide jackets that are every bit as nice as my goat skin jackets. Excelled uses cowhide, and it is a bit heavier (thicker) than my other jackets.
And that is why a 40 was ordered. I gave them all of my info. They suggested the 40 for a slim fit, or a 42 for a relaxed fit.
Of all the jackets looked at recently, these measurements come closest to my ideal specs.
