At Berkeley Hat Co trying (unsuccessfully) to find a replacement for the hat that didn't arrive from Bencraft. Almost bought a Biltmore shangtung straw, but the only one left was a floor model, and they wouldn't cut me a deal on it. The brim was a bit handled, but mostly the cloth sweat (again...
Thanks for the feedback, gents.
The tracking information doesn't give me any helpful info regarding weather, they still haven't updated the delivery date. It is showing as a Priority Mail Express package which supposedly offers a money back guarantee if the ship time is over two days.
It...
Ok Loungers, not sure how to proceed here.
I ordered a black Tesi straw from Bencraft on Easter Sunday. Paid extra for "1-2 day shipping" because the whole reason I bought it was to take it to NOLA on Saturday.
It's Thursday, and according to tracking, my hat arrived in Chicago this morning...
Re: distressing, from Deborah Nadoolman(-Landis) who did the work on the fabled Raiders of the Lost Ark hat:
"The art of costume design is, by necessity, invisible. It just takes a tremendous amount of time to get it right. With the hat, it's not just bashing it in, it's sitting on it, rolling...
Basically.....
I don't know anything about faking sweat stains, which you'll want for a real distressed looked and not a contrived Nick Fouquet piece of nonsense. But Fullers earth is commonly used as "dirt" by prop houses and Indy hat aficionados.
But I beat up my beater by wearing it...
Counterpoint: there's an inherent amount of variability when dealing with felts derived from a natural product such as fur. E.G., as we have said, not all vintage hats have the "clay like" felt.
On the left in this picture is a ca. 1950's Stetson Open Road 3x Beaver. The 3x felt was neither...
Wide brims seem to be picking up in popularity (see Beyonce for an extreme example), but, you know, here's a current Stetson instagram post/ad, for example.
And here's some email spam I got from Urban Outfitters the other day:
Modern hats are an even bigger crapshoot than vintage.
We didn't advise you to seek a vintage hat for no good reason.
Borsalino makes different grades of felt. Open crown hats are meant to be hand shaped, so there's a certain amount of malleability expected. However, not all hats are going to...
Yah, the older you get, the better the chances the felt will react that way. But that looks like an exceptionally nice Borso. Neither of mine crease quite that easily.
Wellema and Black Sheep Hatworks will both do a 100% Beaver western for under $600 (actually $500 and $450 respectively). Northwest Hats is probably a bit under that.
I have a Resistol 10x beaver Cogburn hat which I wear a lot in the rain. Seems to be holding up quite well. I've also given it a...
IIRC, Bob at Black Sheep has done some ventilated felt crown hats. If you order now, it might be ready by next spring ! :D
Edit: yup, of course he does:
So this video popped into my YouTube recommendations, ostensibly a tour of the Christy's factory, at the 3:00 mark, they show a brass embossing die with the Bates logo.
