Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

That poor XJ-6. I've always liked those.

You'll enjoy that...until it breaks down and you try to fix it.

I'm afraid fat-fendered Packards have never done it for me. I like the dual-cowl Phaeton, though.

I love that truck. Great color scheme. Reminds me of this one: Did you paint on your whitewalls?

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

Could be a way to describe the GMC V12 - two V6s bolted together nose-to-tail.

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

Whenever I see a car from the 352 era advertised as having a 351, I wonder if it’s an engine swap or just an error. Reading the auto swapper is usually good for a laugh, with all the “Stahl converters”, “Hurst four-speeds”, and “inline V6s”.

    The Filson Thread

Sounds like she went to a good home, at least.

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

No sweat. Seems like that's the only way I learn anything, is to be wrong about it in front of people at least once. My dad had a friend in the '60s with a 430 in a '56 Crown Vic; so I was familiar with the MEL from a young age. They got as big as 462 c.i. before Ford replaced them with the 429.

Once he figured out how to eliminate the torque tube. :eusa_doh: Lots of solutions out there, but Buicks and Chevrolets of that era both are complicated subjects for transmission swaps because of the ‘tube. MEL (“Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln”). Biggest FE (“Ford-Edsel”) was 428.

    Jury Duty Anyone

Precisely. I'm staggered by the cynicism in this thread. I've never been offered jury duty, but I'd jump at the chance. On the flip side, we recently had a prospective juror held in contempt and jailed due to his lack of cooperation when summoned. Consider that when thinking up your...

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

A friend just sent me a link to Jalopnik coverage on this '52 Buick Super. I've never spent much time considering the Supers, as they couple the large Roadmaster body with the smaller engine: the opposite of my ideal combination. But the photographs make me reconsider. It's a seriously...

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

Commenting primarily to re-up my subscription to this thread (mobile phone comments always unsubscribe me for some reason): The lady with the ‘51 Dodge called me yesterday. I need to call her back and see what she’s asking. We’re buying a new house, though, and I’m not sure much is going to...

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

Is that a recent change? According to this 2010 thread on the HAMB, it sounds like NJ was the same as most other states for pre-smog vehicles. The Bruce Lancaster quoted is a university librarian and a very knowledgeable guy. I trust what he has to say on the topic.

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

That’s highly unrealistic. In most states, California included, you are only required to have in place the originally required emissions and safety gear (which in ‘65 consists of... a PCV valve, wipers, horn, lights, and turn signals?) - no retrofits. Assembled vehicles, titled as such, are a...

Yep, the Star fours were Continentals as well. In their second lives, many went into home-built boats. I was thinking engine swap.

    Show us your Guns!

A couple of historical firearms questions for you to fill in my gaps of knowledge. I’m pretty well versed in military arms, but I’ve never paid much attention to civilian until recently. 1) What would have been the most popular deer rifle of the early (pre-WWI) 20th Century? Winchester Model...

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

I would love to build a 1920s Star roadster with a hopped up Continental Red Seal 226 ci flathead six. They're just an industrial motor to most people, but they were built in my hometown.

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

Coincidentally, that's the whole reason it was at the shop where I spotted it to begin with - the mechanic had just re-done the brakes. Are they still the old Lockheed-type non-self-energizing, or had MoPar gotten away from that by then? Thanks for the tip on the compression check, Stanley! I...

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

I just saw one of these at an old service-station-turned-repair-shop on the west side of Bay City: The mechanic had a Mercury S55 convertible on the lift, a vintage pedal car and a set of fresh Small Block Chevy heads in the office. He said the Dodge is about to go up for sale after the...
