If you want to see for yourself one great example of casual clothes paired with a fedora see The Lark's avatar. The lark, you look great, fantastic way to pair that fedora with something other than suit n tie.
Actually research has been severely hindered by lack of funds. Every time a researcher gets any funds Ebay listings increase and the purchases of fine vintage felt draw that researcher into the disease.
It does look like there are a lot of Homburgs and the snap brims are mostly snapped up. I guess for visibility.
Of the few snapped down ones visible, there are none I can see with any swoop to 'em. Obviously none of Jimmy the lid's relatives were at the game that day.
A couple of photos from Styleforum thread on Averell Harriman, the publisher of LIFE.
I have no idea of the source of the photos since it wasn't mentioned in the thread.
The Mallory photo (2nd one) has an interesting statement about Mallory and being union made.
I wish I could report some rational, noble, or esthetic reason but it all boils down to I JUST DIG HATS.
There are photos of me from childhood where I'm sleeping with an old fedora of my dad's pulled down on my head. Felt fan from WAY back.
It is terrific that hats shield my head from the...
Loved those Adam ads but the strangest thing in all of them is the selling of hats at Crown Loan Office.
HUH?
Was selling hats at stores other than men's wear and department stores very common back in the day?
I'm always hatted for air travel and I have only been asked to put in through Xray one time. I believe it was in Toronto. I am not even asked to remove it for inspection but at most half the time.
I'm with you ML, I just can't get in sync with straw. I wear felts year round but I do cut way back in summer. I don't sweat so bad that I can't wear a felt to the car from the office and vice versa. The a/c in my cars and in my office all work well.
Off the topic, but I have to ask. Is that a Bandera hatters of Ft Worth Hat?
I have a Bandera OR clone and I'd love to know more about them. I strongly suspect them to be re-branded Resistol/Byer-Rolnick hats.
I once had a friend that had a very bad period in his life. Divorce, business failure, and drugs. When he was at his lowest and ending his life was something he entertained HE STILL THOUGHT MORE OF HIS HEAD THAN TO WEAR ONE OF THOSE!!!!!!

The bargains are scarce these days. It seems that fedoras on Ebay are no secret any more.
I wonder if "Mad Men" has helped create this new heightened interest?

I believe you have to take into consideration the damned wind we have around here in FW area. I find my hats listing to one side but then I'll take note of my attitude and realize my whole body is tilted 12-15 degrees to counter the wind.
Of course, I have had many people tell me...
In 1974 a $75 western hat was near the top of the price range.
Ryon's is still at that same location on North Main in Ft Worth.
I believe it is Luskey/Ryon's now. There is another Ryon's up the street, Sean Ryon's but that is a separate store owned by one of the Ryon family descendants.
