I think that the episodes are getting better and better. The Peleilu episodes (5-7) were as good as anything on BOB. And Episode 8 was very powerful at the end - not much battle footage but it gave the idea of just how messed up and chaotic a battle can be - I was feeling melancholy the rest...
What was the significance of Gunny giving Sledgehammer the lighter at the end of the last episode? A passing of the torch (literally and figuratively)?
My favorite is Alvin Karpis - the last Public Enemy No. 1 after Johnny D. and Baby Face Nelson. Karpis was one of the leaders of the Barker-Karpis gang and had an interesting (and profitable) crimnal career between 1931-1936. He was an unapologetic thief who would kill you if you got in his...
Well, we went last night - great swing/big band with Francine Reed singing - most people wore black tie - maybe 8 couples out of 150 wore period stuff.
My "tough" 30s look before going out the door - 5:30 pm so still sunny - got about an hour drive to make it to the viewing for the silent...
TERRIFIC!! Wow, to see what it really looked like in 1906 is unbelievable. I can't believe how popular the bowler hat was. Thank you very much for sharing it with us.

Geez, could this have been a weird pronunciation of Barcardi? I sure don't hear an R in there anywhere when he says it and the emphasis is on the BA not the CAR.
Nick and Nora go to The West Indies Club (separately) and Nick orders a drink that sounds like "Bagady." I played it back several times. I did a search here and on Google on various spellings without success. Any idea of what he was ordering? Thanks!

I appreciate the responses! Dark purple hat with black ribbon, blue/purple pattern tie and blue pocket square may be just the ticket! It doesn't follow that great old chart but I'm willing to take a chance. Thanks!

This is a black tie OR dress in 1920s and 1930s garb $150-a-plate grown-up night time social affair. I don't own black tie garb but I do have a very nice 1930s-looking British charcoal DB suit, crisp white shirt, and black Allen Edmonds Park Avenue shoes- so far so good.
Now the part that...
Kodak Vigilant Junior Six-20 with box and booklets
Found this in my mom's house - I had forgotten all about it - I used to play with it when i was a kid - no film. Just a cool old camera to go with my 1930s desk setup. Thanks for looking.

I wish we knew more about Hyman Lebman, the gunsmith. He was also a well known leather craftsman but it was his stint as a firearms inventor and modifier that I'd like to know more about. Between his full auto pistols, full auto heavily modified Winchester Model 1907 rifles, and Thompson SMG...
Not to be blunt but they are wrong. 380 - 380 auto - 380 acp - 9mm Kurtz - 9mm Browning - 9mm Corto - 9mm Short - are the same small round. 38 acp - 38 auto is a different and larger round. 38 super looks exactly like the 38 acp but has been hopped- up. There is a real danger for owners of...
Well, depends on what you think is weak, especially pre-WWII. 130 gr at 1050 fps was probably ok for the period. As Anon pointed out, the Super just uped the anty 200-250 fps. I've got a 1902 and 1903 Colt that fire the 38 auto/acp and they are a pleasure to fire - easy guns to control and...
I think you mean .38 Auto not .380 auto, correct? The Super 38 was the hot round to have for both good and bad guys during the 1930s as it could punch through bullet proof vests and the thick car bodies of the time. Something the 45 auto wouldn't do.

Dixon - there were Reisings shown in several shots but they were fleeting - I didn't see any being fired, however. The Reising was a pretty good machine gun that wasn't tested enough before being adopted by the Corps. It was blued at first rather than parkerized and doesn't react well to dirt...
