    Suspenders

Thanks for this. I just took a look at their site & was glad to find that they offer 6-button vests and with the full 4 pockets. Try finding those hanging on the rack locally!

    Suspenders

Here's a selection of vintage-styled trousers which come with suspender buttons: https://www.gentlemansemporium.com/store/trousers.php?page=1 At a glance it seems that their buttons are on the outside, perhaps only suit pants came with interior buttons for a sleaker look. Exterior buttons...

    Suspenders

Note that the Suspender Store also carries clip-on suspender buttons. Instead of sewing buttons onto the pants, the clip-ons provide button-like protuberances for installation of the braces. A matter of taste I suppose, some find that buttons dig into their flesh so when not wearing...

    Suspenders

I've used the on-line Suspender Store with excellent results, take a gander: http://www.suspenderstore.com/ Ditto for the Gentleman's Emporium, which leans more towards the vintage look: https://www.gentlemansemporium.com/store/suspenders.php

    Tying neckties

Let's not forget that neckties essentially evolved from scarves that Croatian troops were observed wearing several centuries ago. And that for centuries thereafter neckwear was short by today's standards. Necktie length gradually increased to what it is today, I believe largely following the...

    Tying neckties

I think that neckties were tailored shorter for &/or tied shorter by men who wore vests. Vests were much more popular prior to WW2. Summer temps allowing, I will wear a vest in order to accommodate one or two pocket watches. I must be careful to tie my necktie short or else make a point of...

Let's See Your Watches! The Vintage Watch Thread.

Looks like a nice old daily carry watch. Is that a 17-jewel Swiss movement? I wish I had the brains to have acquired pocket watches when I was 13. They were practically being given away back in those days.

Nice collection, you're fortunate to have a family heirloom in the form of that 1945 Bulova. I'd love to see a few shots of your 1904 Elgin pocket watch including one of the movement!

    Waltham Pocket Watch

I just stumbled upon this thread, late as usual. That's a great looking, well preserved watch! Walthams were first tier pocket watches, my watchmaker tells me that any jewelled Waltham is worth restoring from an horological perspective. And the large 18 size models housed in substantial...

    Which watch

I think any of the 3 Tissots would be fine for casual business. However for sport/weekend use I'd suggest shopping for one with a metal bracelet, leather straps soon begin to show the effects of hard use. Bracelets are acceptable for casual business, but consider the Milanese type for a more...

The Non Shorpy Web All Stars.

If the photo is pre-1900 then I'd expect all of the chaps to have been sporting pocket watches, albeit hidden from view by their overcoats. Back then men refused to wear wristwatches because they were viewed as effeminate. Plus the engineering wasn't really in place yet to produce robust...

And I can make out several pocket watch chains esp. the one hanging from the vest of the gent out front. By the end of the 1920s wristwatches were out-selling pocket watches but the railway men persisted in carrying their official railroad grade pocket watches. Century old pocket watches to...

The chain in question has a spring ring at one end and a T-bar at the other. The T-bar goes through a button hole in the lapel or vest. Here's another shot of the watch in which the relevant attachments can be made out in the vicinity of the pendant: I have no idea whether the spring ring...

Let's See Your Watches! The Vintage Watch Thread.

A lot of really nice wristwatches have been posted over the past few days, making this a most enjoyable thread! I thought I'd turn the clock back a bit further. Here's an open-face LIP 43 mm (aka as 19 ligne) in in-house chronometer mode (17 jewels, adjusted but of course): The silver case...

Let's See Your Watches! The Vintage Watch Thread.

Good grief, it's been months since I last parsed this thread, even though it's one of my favorites. Somewhat belatedly, perhaps I can shed a bit of light on the Soviet watch industry between the world wars. Apparently the Russian Empire never had much of a watch industry, & what there was...

I believe that's retired Texas Ranger Frank Hamer on the far right, with a pocket watch in his breast pocket. The other gents would be members of his crew that took down Bonnie & Clyde.

question about Akubra eyelets vs liners

My David Morgan version of the Akubra Territory sports 2 large ventilation holes per side together with a smaller chinstrap eyelet. The vent holes go all the way through the liner, whereas the hollow chinstrap eyelets are covered by the liner as well as by the sweatband. As noted above the...

    The Bowler or Derby Hat

Does anyone know the significance of what looks like "Real Russia" on the sweat? Model name, made there, composed of furs harvested in Russia? etc. ~ interesting marking indeed on a nice hat

The Trials and Tribulations of Hat Stiffener

Just a reminder that off-the-shelf shellac comes in 2 hues. There's orange shellac as well as clear shellac (somewhat yellowish). The former would be less likely to change the color of a brown hat whereas the clear version would be better for other colors.
