Hi Hurricane, nice pens with great provenance.
Are you able to unscrew the knobs at the ends of your respective fountain pens, & then pull the knobs out so as to expose their filling mechanisms? Don't do so if you meet appreciable resistance when pulling them out, for the seals may very well...
Good looking watch that appears to be in fine condition, i hope you have it serviced & that you wear it as a "tribute" timepiece by way of remembrance.
I like how back in the last century, the various wristwatch makers came up with all sorts of names to describe their automatics. Mido was one...
Very interesting. I wonder whether you picked up your lovely Swiss Ball pocket watch from a Canadian seller ~ are you familiar with the watch's provenance?
Just curious too, about the situation in Oz back in the day, as to whether the Australian railway companies subscribed to a system of...
That's an excellent example of a highly legible dial with boxcar-sized hour numerals, coupled with the "Canadian" dial feature of associated military time markings. Would you happen to know whether your Swiss Ball was approved for railroad service in Canada?
That's a very nice Rockford. i especially like the finger/bridge configuration of the third, fourth & escape wheel plates. I hope that your watchmaker can solve the stoppage issue. And he should be able to tighten the seconds hand on your Illinois no problem.
Thanks for posting !
By all means post your Rockford !
Coincidentally, about 2 or 3 months ago I acquired a 15j Rockford with a perfect dial housed in a silver swing-out case. While running, it's in my queue for servicing just to make sure that the oil hasn't dried up. I don't have any pics of it yet.
It sounds like you've got quite the nice little collection, I strongly suspect that your 15 watches is just the beginning.
Is that Howard an original Howard or is it E. Howard (Keystone) ? I'll likely pick up one of the Keystones in due course but for now I'm keeping an eye on Seth Thomases...
Nice find from 1893, I like those 18 size full-plated timepieces that were built like battleships.
You know, I doubt that the setting mechanism would have been modified by someone from lever to pendant. Illinois would include variants &/or special order items in batches as small as 10...
They knew how to make them back in the day. My Ball-Hamilton pocket watch doesn't appear to have been subjected to much use & remains a great timekeeper.
Yet a third school of thought claims that "on the ball" originated with baseball in as much as the really good players keep their eyes on the ball.
At any rate, I really like the Swiss movement in your Ball pocket watch; looks like a BXC-Record production. It's interesting that the Geneva...
It's so very easy to get addicted to amassing these old pocket watches, especially the higher grade models outputted by the great American watch manufacturers of days gone by.
Here's shot of the movement of my Ball 999N with the Hamilton movement, the dial shot having been posted the other day:
The gold "RR" insert is seen, in tandem with the nearby gold-filled "Official Standard" lettering.
The various plates have circular decorations which resemble "Geneva...
I've been meaning to showcase my Ball pocket watch for some time, so here it is:
The movement designation is Ball 999N which is the American Hamilton 999 movement massaged by Ball & mounted in one of their traditional cases together with a Ball-signed dial. The dial is a combination...
This Illinois Model 3 pocket watch of Grade 275 was acquired from my father & has been in my possession since 1984. He never really gave it to me, I took possession through osmosis i.e. it just wound up with my things:
This timepiece was made in 1925, the year following my father's birth...
Demi-hunter pocket watches are uncommon and desirable, especially in sterling. A very nice dress timepiece which must make for a great conversation piece when pulled out.
Viewing vintage photos of men sporting suspenders without vests, it's my impression that the waists of their pants were somewhat generous. That would have allowed their shirt tails to naturally slither back down, if not on their own responsive to gravity then with a slight sweep of the hand.
I'd go larger. Especially if leather, sweat bands tend to shrink with exposure to heat & moisture. Meanwhile you can always add filler material between the sweat band & the body of the hat, such as strips of foam, cloth, paper etc.
Besides which there's nothing more miserable than a hat which...
Further to this my previous post, I have now figured out how the 4 chronograph scales are used. It wasn't green beer that did the trick, but rather reading a good book (precisely what my father used to tell me to do).
In any event, if anyone's interested in knowing how to read multi-scale...
The vintage Seiko 5 models as well as their "Sportsmatic" cousins were very well made & kept great time. I especially appreciate the Japanese penchant for including the day of the week indicator in addition to that for the date.
I generally don't give a hoot about the date but it's sure nice...
