In honor of St. Patrick's Day, it is incumbent and necessary to resurrect the vintage mechanical watch thread.
Today's showcase watch is a one-button chronograph produced by the LIP company that was based in Besancon, France from 1867 until its bankuptcy in the mid-1970s. This particular...
My Elgin Model 571 "B.W. Raymond" was made in 1952 & is virtually identical to yours save that there's a "Canadian" style dial on mine, also pristine. I do like your dial better, the "Montgomery" type is my favorite. If I was looking for a nice vintage 16 size Elgin pocket watch I'd surely...
A very nice example of a Railway Grade pocket watch from circa 1954. Elgin sure knew how to make them! That "Montgomery" style dial looks to be in great shape.
I have now received the recently purchased reference book "History of the American Watch Case" by Warren H. Niebling. Although it lists the casemaking firm of Serex & Robert as being active in 1880s Boston, the author did not include a reproduction of any trademark granted to or business mark...
I recently purchased Warren H. Niebling's reference book "History of the American Watch Case" on eBay & am currently awaiting delivery. Perhaps it contains a depiction of the trademark used by Messrs. John F. Serex & Arnold Robert, described as "watch-casemakers" in the 1882 Boston directory...
Could it be "S & R" in which case "Serex & Robert" could be the case makers as per the listing on the linked page:

I don't see anything...
That's a very nice pocket watch, I have several Model 1883s & love them all, they're excellent time keepers. I have them in both the hunter & the open face configurations.
Until roughtly post-WWI the large American watch manufacturers shipped their movements uncased, the first buyer would then...
I cut off about 1/4" from a spray can wand or else strip the insulation from an electrical wire, where the inside diameter of the "keeper" is such as to fit snugly onto the pin. Upon slipping the "keeper" onto the pointed end of the pin, I've never since lost a lapel pin.
Here's an 18 size Waltham pocket watch which I picked up at a flea market last fall. It's a Model 1883 of Grade 3 sporting a full plate nickel movement with 11 jewels housed in a gold-filled case. The watch was produced at the Waltham factory in 1893 or 1894:
The vendor acquired it from...
Here's a classic round watch with small seconds, which during the 1950s was the wristwatch mainstay of the LIP manufacture with production facilities in Besancon, France. The original LIP company was established in 1867, going bankrupt in the mid-1970s. Powered by the LIP R25 movement, this...
That watch & key combination would work really well with a sterling double Albert chain. That would take up 2 pockets on your vest but still leave 2 for other items. Vests with 4 pockets are the cat's meow!
cmoy, a very nice specimen of an English fusee full plate pocket watch indeed.
I recently took delivery of a similar item, also key wind & key set. It was made by a Welsh firm known as Jones & Jones. On the dial they boasted that it contained the "New Victor Lever Escapement". The watch runs...
I happened to observe that Kellyanne Conway was sporting a bright red hat as well. Her hat just happened to catch my eye, that's all I noticed of course.
Grommets alone would be fine for ventilation only. I doubt that 1/8" grommets would help that much unless you used quite a few. Having said that, back in the day ventilated fur felt hats were offered with tiny holes arranged in patterns, I recall seeing posts on this forum dealing with the...
Waltham produced various similar octagonal models in the late 1920s & into the 1930s, this could be an example. The company may have continued such designs into the 1950s although the Art Deco look would have been considered dated by then. Of course in the 1950s a character sporting a 20- or...
Cary Grant probably started some sort of fad which others picked up on. I read somewhere that he often wore his collar popped up when not sporting a necktie or scarf. Apparently he was self-conscious of his thick muscular neck which he developed while performing as an acrobat during his youth...
I've found Bruce/Holland Hats to be an excellent vendor with great pricing even without their frequent special discounts.
And a real plus is free shipping to Canada for orders over $100. Any hat that I buy is priced over $100 thus I always have qualified for free shipping.
I like this watch. Looks like it has a quality 15 jewel movement,
typically unadorned but reliable & accurate.
Perhaps this is a pocket watch that was re-configured at the
factory for use on the wrist due to wartime demand.
What's the protuberance at 6 o'clock? Is this a pin set model?
As an...
