Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

Vehicles built after January 1, 1942 had painted trim instead of chrome. I've never heard of the total elimination of bumpers, though I've seen a period photo of a Hollywood actress posing with her now-bumperless car and a sign that says something to the effect of "Please drive careful, my...

    Old gas stations

I used to live in Bay City, Michigan, which didn't claim to be his hometown but did claim to be the town where he was killed in a drunken brawl.

I love drinking fountains but these new aluminum jobs with the built-in coolers can't hold a candle to the old porcelain ones in my 1949-built elementary school.

    Anyone into tent camping?

I'm trying very hard to get into tent-based auto camping as a part of my club. My goals look something like this:

Really, I meant the social equivalent of sneakers today, not that sneakers didn't exist. My grandfather played basketball in college in 1937-'38 and certainly wore canvas and rubber sneakers for that, though I can't recall him wearing tennis shoes otherwise. To get (slightly) back on topic, I...

    Old gas stations

My great-grandfather, a decorative plasterer, also favored saddle shoes for work. I've always thought of it as the '30s-'50s equivalent of wearing sneakers.

I have a set of 1930-'31 Chevrolet wheels for my gow job project. Two of them had petrified tires still mounted. One was a Mobil Tire De Luxe with a Mobil Tube De Luxe inside. The tube still holds air! Though the bead on the tire suffered somewhat in the removal. They're decor items in my den...

A Day in the Life of the NY Times, 1942

Imagine the smells and sounds! I'm sure it was grueling, but it looks amazing.

What do you do for Living?

Now I'm a journalist (well, I'm still a lawyer, I just quit practicing) but still not all that well dressed!

Glad it wasn't worse! Also a good reminder that it's not unwise to carry a fire extinguisher as a form of cheap insurance.

What do you use to shave?

I agree, Trenchfiend, and I'll go even further and say that I like my boar-bristle brushes quite well. Nothing else seems to get the soap/cream integrated with the whiskers as well.

You accidentally started typing within the quotation. You have to make sure your response is after the [ / QUOTE ]

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

More likely they know that the change will get people talking about it again and spur some sales.

    Show us your vintage home!

I grew up in Michigan, so this move (made in late summer 2015) was the big one of my life. I'm so glad we did it, though. Good luck with your relocation and your job!

Not that we've ever met, but I'm sorry to hear I'm losing the closest thing to a local lounger!

    Stars And Their Cars

I had that issue of Motor Trend Classic with the Clark Gable Gullwing. I was so mad when they discontinued that magazine and gave me Motor Trend instead.

    Indiana Jones V

Well, I had to look him up, but I'd say young Mr. Ingruber would be an excellent choice. And it's only 1926 for that Indy.
