    Spit and polish

After a couple of years in and around this forum, watching who says what, I have begun to wonder about the relationship between an appreciation of vintage or retro 'culture', and an awareness of military...issues, for want of a better word, now I don't know how one sets up such a thing, but a...

Battle of the Bulge Reenactment - Big Lake, MN 19 DEC 09

Disgraceful Care to enlighten those of us with merely a casual interest in such matters, what is so wrong with the picture, apart from what looks like partly-finished roof framing in the background, no doubt an unlikely sight in the Ardennes at the time......

    Dry aging beef

black jack A famous restaurant in Sydney apparently used to leave the beef sitting in the fridges until it went BLACK all around that's dry black not rotting black, which took a couple of weeks, then cut off the outer layers to reveal the still-worthy meat inside and then fry away.....or so...

*Many Pics* Original 1938-39 Royal airforce Jacket and pants

walkout Without claiming any expert knowledge beyond what I've been told by actual veterans, I believe that once Hitler started Op Barbarossa, the Russians very quickly realised that it was all hands required and the Polish prisoners who had been forced to surrender to them in 1939 might be...

    Give me tattoo ideas

look hard What about the FL logo?..... but just quietly, my father was ex-military and he said he'd disown me if I ever got one..why? If you need to be somebody else, somewhere else, in a hurry, you can dye your hair, change your eye colour, but with tatts, no go....your skin will do you in......

    Cleaning a white linen suit...

how u look at it Didn't the French fleet have something to do with it? (Been watching the John Adams HBO thing) At the time most of our ancestors were on prison hulks waiting to be hanged for stealing snotrags......

    Cleaning a white linen suit...

first date Not at all, you see, Americans write their dates utterly and completely WRONG! That date is the 6th of January, which is a reasonable turnaround in the holiday season I would say, I think Ben Franklin changed the way dates are written over there to differentiate from the original...

Best way to age an A-2

Patina At the risk of being facetious, why not just wait.....a truly broken in jacket has an effect that can't be replicated and only achieved by time and the elements.

    james cameron's AVATAR in 3-D

Corn but sweet Look, I thought it was DWW in Space before I came to this thread, but is that a bad thing, this is an epic effort from a filmmaker out to ENTERTAIN people...I've never spent $20 seeing a film before in my life but every cent was worth it and every second was of value, not a dead...

    Remake of The Big Sleep

not all bad Then of course as has been mentioned before in other threads, there's the 70's remake of Farewell My Lovely, which I consider Mitchum's finest hour, and one of the great Noir films.

    Remake of The Big Sleep

Bad idea I remember the contemporary 70's attempt at it...it wasn't much good, but better than the LONG GOODBYE with Elliot Gould around the same time...that STANK

    Ecperience a WW2 POW Camp

YOU VILL HAVE FUN! I mentioned this once before, but apparently there is/was a mock concentration camp on some horrible windswept island off Norway where wayward jewish kids were sent to get some idea of what their grandparents had gone through....read it somewhere but don't know the details.....

Does anybody here have an example of the item of clothing called a "stengah shifter" so frequently referenced in the short stories of W. Somerset Maugham?

    Dave Brown Hats

frack to bunt No, they were probably dills following a thankfully short-lived trend of wearing fedoras backwards intentionally like some forgotten pimp rapper.....my sax player did it once, until I took the hat off him. As to the main issue here, hyperbole is the bedrock of the film business...
