Look what she's using her cross-zip motorcycle jacket for...

Of course she’s a WW2 welder! In Sheffield UK we’ve honoured our Aunts and Grandmothers who took over men’s jobs in the steel industry etc. without whose contribution we’d have lost the War, and it’s a theme that should spread to Steel cities in the USA Australia and the other allies too don’t...

(KNIVES) Let's see some sharp pointy objects

No offence intended but isn’t that a ‘sledge hammer to crack a nut’ situation? It’s a great knife for chopping said pumpkin into lumps for roasting but you might be neater using a short (6”) length of broken hacksaw or coping saw blade with a handle made from a wrap or two of sticky tape -...

cafe racer jackets: opinions on these linings and leather thickness

Lots of modern fashion jackets are made from thin nappa (lamb/sheep) leather so they drape a bit like cloth. They also tear really easily if you catch them on door furniture etc. Most of the jackets discussed here are made of tougher stuff - cowhide, horsehide or goatskin which may develop that...

What is the "right" age to retire?

I retired from teaching at 53 and swapped to a ‘retirement’ job working a few hours each week on a friends recycling site. I took my teachers pension at 57 - after taking advice from an independent financial adviser who suggested there was no point in waiting for age 64 for an extra 1.5 k per...

(KNIVES) Let's see some sharp pointy objects

Well, after a bit of research it seems to be solved. Military knives and bayonets often had such a slot to act as a pivot point with a protrusion on a metal sheath. This converted the back of the blade into a barbed wire cutter. So given that Wadkin made and make woodwork machinery but in...

(KNIVES) Let's see some sharp pointy objects

Update -Wadkins got back to me. As usual these days the current owners bought the name and the business some time ago and don’t have an archive so I’ve reached a dead end on that line of enquiry.

    G1 Restoration advice

On an iPhone I email them to myself - on either hotmail, iCloud and gmail it asks ‘what size image’ and I choose ‘medium’. I then open the email and save the pics to photos. These smaller files then will upload to the site.

(KNIVES) Let's see some sharp pointy objects

I bought this a few months ago at an Antique Fair - the makers mark is Wadkin Leicester who make woodworking machinery. I’m wondering if this is a wartime item produced for the military? It has an unusual slot cut through the blade. I’ve contacted Wadkin for info on the knife.

Schott 618hh. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

I’ve got a Schott 628H and would consider it ok to wear while riding my Brompton folding bike, but wouldn’t dream of wearing it as personal protective equipment (PPE) on a motorbike. The leather is too thin to stand any serious abrasion and there is no room to wear armour.

We’ll see but I should be ok with the Madras from eBay and the kit.

    Help with Barbour Tartan

Thank you to rocketeer too as Jojo came up trumps - he’s got a new old stock Barbour repair kit (Barbour no longer sell them). I’m picking it up tomorrow. If anyone needs similar there are a few on eBay. It’s a tin which seems to contain three different coloured plaid patches - including mine...

    Help with Barbour Tartan

Quite right Edward A bit more research came up with the term ‘plaid’ - cotton which is printed and not woven like a true tartan. India is a great source of printed plaid cotton and I’ve managed to pick up a piece big enough to patch my International. It’s not quite a perfect match but as my dad...

    ID these gloves

Ps and if a seller has a free returns policy - take my wife’s advice and send for two sizes keeping the ones that fit, returning the ones that don’t and sometimes returning both if you don’t like them. If you time it right your refund will come in before the credit card bill.

    ID these gloves

Return them using their printed returns label or a recorded or signed for delivery, get a refund and reorder the correct size. Any quibbles and you can contest via your credit card or PayPal Bank etc. However it shouldn’t come to that judging by their policy on returns shown here...

    Help with Barbour Tartan

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. I searched the Lochcarron site with no success and I’ve had negative replies from Barbour but they are researching the name of the tartan for me. I couldn’t bring myself to butcher a vintage Barbour - they never die l.o.l. I’ve spoken to Jojo and he...

    Help with Barbour Tartan

I’ve got a 1980’s International jacket with a dark blue tartan lining which needs a couple of patches where the lining has worn adjacent to the pockets. Sadly Barbour no longer stock this particular tartan so I’m trying to source some in order to repair the lining myself. Does anyone know the...

    TRIPLE GOOSE F.A.T DOWN JACKETS

I googled ‘goose down production’ and found that North America, Europe and Asia are the major producers. Not helpful but I strongly suspect that the manufacturers will purchase down from international suppliers who source their down from whosoever is cheapest at that time. I was surprised to...

How do you decide when it's time to sell a jacket?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Art is similarly subjective. If I consider a creation to be art then that's good enough for me.
