Bought this a couple of weeks ago. I don’t buy many originals now because they are hard to find in good condition in the UK these days. But this one is really quite good for its age and the hide is unmarked. The lining is good synthetic fleece and there are no stains or tears anywhere.
The zip...
Really nice collection. Jackets from that period are hard to find in good wearable condition now. At least on this side of the Atlantic. Back in the seventies they were easy to find and quite cheap and I wore and sold on a few. But of course a forties jacket them was only thirty years old, the...
Goat doesn’t absorb most conditioners as readily as other leathers. It doesn’t absorb water as readily either of course. Maybe Renapur penetrates it better? Never tried it myself. I have heard good things about it over the years though.
Me too. Patina is the deep colour you can look into on an old piece of well finished wood, and the brown oxidised film on old bronzes which should not be polished off. In wood the result of many decades sometimes hundreds of years of polishing in dust residues. It’s part of the character of the...
I’m not saying that goat doesn’t soften and show more grain with age. Of course it does, and my AL black goat Roadster is now much softer and grainer after three years than it was new. But an Eastman M422 I had some years ago hardly changed at all and never softened much; and unlike most leather...
I think it’s a mistake in any walk of life to take up an interest and expect to get it right and perfect the first time. It will almost certainly lead to disappointment and a sense of anticlimax if you obsess and plan and invest so much time and effort on getting it absolutely totally right...
I thought I’d post some pictures of a Headwind 37J1 jacket I ordered in early November after seeing them here on the FL. It was delivered a week ago after sitting in customs for two weeks over the extended Christmas shut down in the UK. I decided on the 37J1 version as it’s a bit more unusual...
I wonder what a jacket like this would be worth compared to one in original condition? After all it can’t be said that these are theatre alterations really and they might just as well have been done post war to make for a more practical jacket.
As to unique, my mother cut the body of an Irvin...
Wouldn’t have been made with the zip pockets would it, and the hood was not centre zipped in the originals? Is it a repro or is it original and those were added later?
To quote the great George Best who some of you will have never heard of. “ I spent my money on booze and birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."
Goat won’t change much over years. CLX HH will take years of hard wear to get anything like the two pictures as well. Personally I would call those jackets well worn and one almost worn out. But each to his own. The lighter CLX Steer breaks in quicker than HH in my experience. But if you’re set...
I had an uncle who was at Jutland as a boy of fourteen. The difference between that sort of action and merchant ships is that the latter were sitting ducks at the start of the war. Even when the convoy system was reinstated they steamed at the speed of the slowest ship - no more than 8 knots...
My father was in the RN in the war and served at times on escort duties for Atlantic and Arctic convoys. The Arctic convoys were much more dangerous because the water was so cold that men could not be usually be saved when they went in and death occurred after only a few minutes. They knew that...
Well, Hedy Lamarr’s last big hit was Samson and Delilah opposite Victor Mature. Groucho Marx was quoted as saying that it was the first film he’d seen where the leading man had bigger tits than the leading lady.
