If you want a dress hat, I would pick Stetson. If you want a resilient, bad weather hat, I would pick Akubra. If you wanted the best hat for your money, I would advise researching custom hatters.
Often referred to as the Gus crease.
Many western hat makers offer this. Stetson has one or two off the rack hats blocked like that, IIRC.
Here's Adam Savage's hat:
My late 40's Stetson Junior Cowboy:

You know, all this time I forgot I do actually have a modern Stetson 6x felt. It was blocked/finished by Knudsen hats, so it's possible that it is significantly different from what comes direct from Stetson. That having been said, my 6x is relatively thick and very firm.
I've not been super...
Nice hat, even in my size!
No. 1 Quality was the base level quality for these kinds of hats. It's hard to assign a specific model name, because we have incomplete information on the entirety the Stetson line-up.
For example, here is a page from the 1902 dealer catalog (prices listed are per...
I am no Panama expert, so I would defer to other members that may want to chime in with a more experienced eye; but, I don't see anything alarming in the photos you've posted. Is it a hat Brent Black would sell? Maybe not, it's not impeccable. But as it is, the 'flaws' in this hat won't be...
When I took the last 7 1/8 Boss Raw Edge from JJ, they sent me a pair of these Cap Ban Nu to size down. They're a bit more expensive than stuffing some paper towel, but effective and pretty comfy. Also available on a popular e-commerce site named after a South American rainforest.
I think we need to define our parameters here. The quality difference is fairly evident if one is able to handle say, a pre-war hat vs a modern factory hat.
If you're looking at new, off the rack hats, stay away from wool and anything sized S/M/L/XL. Of the current Stetson line up, the more...
Wilbert Freeman McAlister, the 80-year old President of the Oakland Black Cowboy Association, which is dedicated to preserving and passing on the often overlooked history of Black cowboys in the old west. He is the subject of an upcoming short form documentary on youtube.
Evening dog walk in my HJ Raiders Poet. I guess I never noticed, or put 2+2 together, but the reservoir out in my neighborhood was built in 1936, the same year Raiders is set. Funny coincidence.
I actually had not popped the #52 open until today. It does look like it has a slight bit more taper than my Randal Allan #52. This could possibly be shrinkage over time, or a minor discrepancy in block replication over time.
I do think the crowns have a slightly different dome profile, the #51...
I'm partial to both the Clubmaster and Wayfarer. This is a wannabe Wayfarer with 'wood' arms because I am not paying what Ray Ban is asking for Rx lenses.

Worth and Worth is also Manhattan, though they're a pricey custom hatter now: https://hatshop.com/
