I'm leaning towards no. I think you could probably manage to remove the upturns on the side, but I would be less confident that you could get it back to factory fresh without a flange....unless you want a flat brim. I've handled one or two of those 4x hats and they weren't great as far as...
Probably for the same reason Fender (and Gibson/Epiphone, etc, etc, etc) sell a whole line of 'Signature' instruments. Everybody has to draw inspiration from somewhere. The celebrity endorsement, implicit or no, seems to carry a lot of cache.
The recent (last decade or so) explosion of interest...
I don't have a scale, so I don't know weights, but I did take this comparison a while back between my 1910's-ish boss Raw Edge (left) and modern (right). I don't have calipers either but I also suspect the modern one is thicker than average.
Here's another between my modern Fortune and Glory...
3" brim is nothin'!
This is my current favorite brim width, about 3"-3 1/4". Just IMHO, it's wide enough to clearly distinguish it from a wide brim fedora, but not so wide that you look like you just checked into a dude ranch.
Just going off the one pic it does look like it may be a pre-war hat, but No. 1 quality was a long running designation off and on until the 60's or so, IIRC. Any inside tags?
Found two references to Vargaus in the SJSU newspaper, earlier one being 1937, the latter being 1940. Unfortunately not particularly helpful for dating.
Evening dog walk in the urban sombrero, aka modern Stetson Boss Raw Edge. We need all the rain we can get in this state, but preferably a little more spread out than the past two weeks.
For whatever it is worth (from someone who can count their number of full teardown hat renovations on one hand) I agree with the above posts.
If you want to continue to experiment, consider investing in a block and some basic tools and just going for it. It'll be fun! The cost savings of...
The Austin has more taper than my modern Premiere Strat for sure, but it does look a bit less tapered than the standard Optimo fedora. If an Optimo is in your budget, I doubt you'll regret it. At the same time, Northwest is very well regarded and is considerably less for 100% beaver (Winchester...
Many of us here have hats from Art and he drops in from time to time.
Can you clarify what you mean by "historically correct"? Because that could slice any number of ways. From a certain point of view, no modern hat is "historically correct" to the 30's unless you find a deadstock mercury felt...
We had an atmospheric river over the bay. Which I guess is the meteorological term for a whole lot of rain. Streets and freeways flooded kind of rain. The nutria mix Dylan hat got soaked through on the brim.
Well the original hats were just cut by hand with scissors. IIRC, John Penman has a template he uses. I don't know of any rounding jack that can automatically make a dimensional cut. Though Scientific Hat finishing describes a process where you can create a tapered shim out of leather, which...
I like a 3" brim, but agree that we're straying out of the "fedora" category at that size. 4.5" is wide even by modern western standards. I don't even know where one would buy a fedora styled hat with a 4.5" brim. Just for me personally, I probably wouldn't go wider than 3" with a suit, unless...
Navy pinstripe you say?
In all seriousness though, do you have a budget in mind? Is it important to you to have a vintage hat, or would you wear a more modern one?
If you're ok with an off the rack hat, the Akubra Federation IV is a solid choice. Famously resilient, pretty classic styling...
