How is it compared to say, Optimos' and Alley Kat's FEPSA?

It does not compare favorably with any of them. My two Alley Kat hats were some of his early work and I was not impressed at all. I suspect his hat making has improved considerably with years of experience.

In my experience, Akubra felt is that they are very inconsistent even when comparing the supposedly same felt (e.g. two hats made from Imperial dress weight felt). I think that if your points of reference are Optimo and other FEPSA felt you’re bound to be disappointed with Akubra’s felt. It’s not bad at all, but it’s not bad in the same way that a 1970s Resistol 5X isn’t bad. The Akubra’s hand is similar to most current inexpensive western furniture felt…damning with faint praise. Knowing what to expect, I was not disappointed in this felt at all, but then I wasn’t comparing it to Optimo. :)
The felt is firm and will hold its shape. It’s hard to explain if you don’t have experience with modern hats in this price range.

Good morning folks. No hats on my head today. The feel like temp of -30'f (-34'c) has me under a heavy wool Mackinaw cap with ear flaps. The new snow has been relocated and the walkways are shoveled! I am grateful to have a powerful snowblower this morning.

It has been two days in the same cap. Can you imagine!

Stay safe and warm folks. Cheers, Eric -

Beautiful, Eric! To me, as an Acapulco-born, snowy cold climates are painful, even if they are beautiful.
Hey, come to think of it, so was my first wife!
