    Another mystery garment

The FL experts seem to have keen eye maybe you could help identify the era and type of army coat this is. It's really heavy, and has those old army buttons. But that's all I really know. Thanks in advance:

    My Grandfather's WWII Pics

If that last pic was taken in Italy it could be the Salerno beachhead, on September 9th, 1944 -- 63 years ago today! According to wikipedia the US 5th Army made a water-borne landing and faced heavy German resistance, which is what you seem to see in your photo. Here's a picture from the...

    My Grandfather's WWII Pics

Wow, thanks for sharing. That last one looks like a reconnaissance shot of a naval landing/ battle in progress. It's taken from pretty high up, the ships are pretty close to the beach and right in the center you can see a huge blast near the ships in the water.

Rialto Theatre in S. Pasadena Closes

Dang, that was a cool place. I saw a number of films there. Rear Window as well as Planet of the Apes. In fact, I still have some un-used gift tickets to the Rialto that my ex-girlfriend gave me. Guess it's too late to use them. :o

The Elephant in the Room - Man Purse

Courier or Messenger Bag Suggestions? I'm looking for a laptop/ courier bag that has a nice vintage look to it. Anyone have a suggestion for a nice, durable courier/ messenger type bag that doesn't look like most of the other ugly modern bags? Kind of looking for a military look. Canvas...

    1930's Aerodromes

You should check out the Santa Barbara Airport in California-- I believe it was originally built in the 1930s. It's still intact, with much of its original adobe/ Spanish colonial style still apparent. I just flew out of there on Saturday. It's very cute. The only sad thing is that one of...

    Detroit Race Riots of 1943-HELP!

Yes, perhaps a link to a flickr account with a warning for those who might be sensitive would be the best. I think flickr is pretty "anything goes" on images. Thanks again for putting historical preservation before commerce. Good luck with this!

    Detroit Race Riots of 1943-HELP!

You may also want to contact a local university. They usually have people who know how to preserve or handle special collections material like this and would be very interested in getting to a larger community -- so that people will remember, and possibly have the same experience and reaction...

1933 Plot Against FDR: BBC Radio Documentary

The subject of the attempted coup against FDR by US corporate leaders in 1933 came up in an earlier thread. Well, I just happened upon this BBC radio documentary all about it. Haven't listened to it yet but the quality of BBC programing is well known -- especially compared to most American...

Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

Yeah, I also scored about a dozen 50s silk ties on that visit too. The jacket didn't really jump out at me until I saw the tag. And I don't think I even I saw the back belt until I got it home.:o Any idea where I can find more info about it's age/ design?

Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

Found this 40s or 50s Dickies denim jacket (with back belt!) at a random Goodwill during a long road trip. And this 30s or 40s woman's hat at a local hole-in-the-wall thrift store. Sorry for the ugly decapitated dummy head! :p

    Found: Unknown WWII Flyboy Picture

Hmm... interesting. I didn't know Grandma liked the Navy guys. I thought she was strictly an Army Air Corps gal.

    Found: Unknown WWII Flyboy Picture

After my grandmother died, my family was going through her mountains of stuff and found this mini photo portrait of an unknown flyboy (it certainly isn't my grandfather!) in his B-3 flight jacket. No name, just a number penciled on the back. Might have been one of her boyfriends or just a...

    WWII Eccentric Heroes

What about William J. "Wild Bill" Donovan? Creator of the OSS (which later became the CIA) and the 1st person to be awarded all four of the highest US medals (Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, and the National Security Medal.

    Korean War E-bay Uniform Bonanza...

Nice haul. Did it set you back a lot? Wonder whose trunk it's been in for the last half century. :)

    They've gone too far.

Thanks for the hot tip on the Fusion -- that is the closest shave I have in a while. Glides pretty nice, too. I'll have to try some of those shave oil suggestions, though, on the rough spots. I normally use an electric (I know, sacrilege) mainly because I'm too bleary-eyed in the morning to...
