    Photography/ clothing dating queston

Hello all, Not sure if this is the place to pose this question, but here goes: I recently found an old khaki uniform shirt, probably WW2 or just post-war era. On the inside shirt waist is an extremely faint military spec stamp -- seems to either says 1945 or 1955. I can barely make it out...

    Help Date This Norwegian Jacket

Hello FL experts, I've got another thrift store find for your to ponder over: Kind of looks like US M-1943 jackets I've found in the past, only this one is more grayish green. The jacket is pretty stiff, much like WW2 era cotton canvas items I've handled before. Other than...

    Help Identify This Army Jacket

Hello all, Wondering if anyone can help identify/ date this army jacket. I'd guess Vietnam War era tanker jacket of some sort. It's pretty beat up and missing any tags it might have had. The "Gripper" Scovil zipper pull is not one I've seen on any Vietnam era jacket before, so maybe it's...

What Kind of Fabric is This?

So, I realize that guys aren't supposed to spend much time in the Powder Room, here :o but I thought this place was better to suited to weigh in on this question than the bomber-jacket-dominated Outerwear section. I found this coat at a second hand recently and I was just wondering if someone...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Dating these Buttons Here's a pea coat related question. I found a bag of pea coat buttons at thrift store (pic below) and I was wondering if there was any way to tell the era they're from. Are there any significant differences between WW2 era pea coat buttons and those from later periods...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

That tag dates from 1972, you can tell from the "72" in the "DSA-100-72-G-0304" on the tag, which means the coat was issued during the last combat year of the Vietnam War, although the party officially ended in 1975.

    War Of The Worlds Hoax

My mother, who grew up in Ecuador, told me that when the radio station in Quito did a Spanish version of The War of the Worlds in the mid-1940s (mind you, several years after The Mercury Theater incident), not only did it cause a general panic but angry residents later burned down the radio...

    Zippers

Dating this Zipper? Can anyone give me a reasonable guess for the era of this zipper pull? If it helps, it was attached to this Asian-style gold lamé dress: I was guessing maybe 40s or 50s, there are no tags so the zipper and the cut. look of the dress are the only clues to age...

What's the Era of the "Pure Wool" Symbol?

Anyone know when the wavy-triangular pure wool symbol started being used on clothing tags? There must be an easy way to date clothing based on its use on tags. Additionally, does anyone know of a good vintage clothing tag resource/ ID website? Thanks in advance!

    Mystery Uniform Shirt (dated 1945?)

The thrift store flotsam has washed up another mystery garment for me to test on the FL experts: It's black, a thin wool, with reinforced sleeve cuffs, a badge mount on the left breast, and with unusual milky white cat-eye buttons up the front and on the cuffs. It almost...

The Hat From "There Will Be Blood"?

So I just watched the film There Will Be Blood again tonight and I forgot how enamored I was by Daniel Day Lewis's (aka Daniel Plainview's) hat: Anyone know what the style is and where I might be able to obtain one? It looks sort of like a pre-WW1 campaign hat, but with a rolled brim and...

    Mystery Chinese Coat (redeux)

I just posted this in the WW2 section but I've been advised this might be the better place... Here's another puzzle for the FL experts. It's a dark blue gabardine coat with great pockets and tabs on the cuffs, a removable rabbit fur (I think) liner, and Chinese tag. If I had to guess I'd...

    Show Us Your OVERCOATS

40s Swedish Tank Corps Great Coat I found this late 40s Swedish tank corps great coat here in a thrift store in Santa Barbara, California (!) a few months ago. Gotta love the lightning-shooting tank lapel insignia, huh? And the tiger tag was cool too. Sold it on eBay awhile back...

Land of the LOST as a movie

The way I see it, no matter if this were done a serious tribute or an all out farce its not going to be satisfying to people who grew up watching the original show. I feel the same way about the Spider-man - nice execution but my childhood memories a so much better. The original Land of the...

    WW2 German Tank Binoculars

Hello All, I'd like to share some pictures of a unique piece of WW2 memorabilia. I'm on Spring vacation at my uncle's and I remembered he has this great big, 20 lb. pair of binoculars that were once mounted of some kind of German tank. So I hauled them outside this afternoon and took some...
