When I first traveled in these United States back in the 80's, the beer was indeed undrinkable - the mass market ones still are.
The good news is that the small breweries have really stepped up and there are loads of decent ones. We have some great small breweries here in New England and even some of the left coast ones like Sierra Nevada make nice beer.

I had a PBR a month or two ago. Thank God it was ice cold because I couldn't get it down otherwise. On the flip side, it was free. It was worth exactly what I paid for it. :eusa_doh:
