To argue otherwise demands that all populations around the world and through time are/were striving to meet some perfect image. This is hard to believe, given the sheer volume of different tastes out there.

I'd go even further: To argue otherwise demands that all populations around the world and through time are/were striving to meet the same perfect image. I don't think there's a "Platonic ideal taste" that's somehow eternal or nature-given. Good taste to me is my taste. I suppose most people define it that way (the difference of course being that I'm right and they're wrong ;) ).

Perhaps the concept of taste, style, fashion and fad had some type of self limiting interest. It used to be that a fashion faded when its elements were taken to the extreme and was eventually seen as a parody of itself.

Today however, the concept of being "too extreme is not enough" has been enable, outrageousness and narcisism is seen as something laudible or simply a right to seek happiness. So now there is no sense of extreme and any condemnation of extremes is considered prejudicial. the concept of being an enabler is disappearing with it.

A famous city in the east, teens may get free condoms in school, and there are needle exchanges for the drug addicts but you can't buy a fountain drink soda larger than 16 ounces. What does one enable, lend tacit agrement to, versus disavow or vilify?

Two words: Beau Brummell.

Richard O'Brien once named Beau Brummell as the point at which creativity in male dressing died - "...along came Beau Brummell, and we've all been wearing that same damn suit ever since." It's all subjective. Even the perceived need for clothing as anything other than protection from the elements, climate requiring.
