White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

Hi buddy - always good to see you on FL.

I have this one ⇩ coming from Guideboat - bought on post Xmas sale (just checked, there as still some in stock). I already own the navy one. It's not as heavy as North Sea, which works for me as the NS ones can only come out in brutally cold weather; whereas, this Guideboat one can be worn in "normal" cold weather.

It also fits me well (hard to say it has a good fit as that's so personal) but for 119 bucks, it is good value as it is a substantial sweater even if not in NS's class. And the cuffs and waist band are tight which I like - I hate when they are "loose" and become floppy.

Looks great and if I did not have a zillion sweaters, I'd get that one too. I have bought many items from Guideboat and I really like the products, good quality, distinctive and at a fair price and great price at sale time.

I'm 1m68 / 5'6 and approx. 55kg / 121 pounds but i have rather long arms which is why i can't roll the sleeve of the sweater.

Huh? Say what? I would have thought at least 6' tall.

I remembered, this morning, that Jimmy Stewart's character in the 1940 movie "The Mortal Storm" wore an off-white submariner toward the end of the movie. There's actually a scene where he puts it on (clothes in action) and you see the full sweater, but unfortunately, I could only find these pictures which just shows the turtleneck part. It's a neat example of the timeliness of the sweater.

This is exactly how I envision wearing a submariner sweater, under my peacoat or leather German police jacket (which is similar in styling to the wool coat Stewart wears in the top photo). Looks incredible - just like almost all of the Guideboat clothing. Post some pics when you try it on.

My Guideboat submariner sweater arrived late yesterday. I tried it on today and it's a great garment. The weight and texture is very reminiscent of my Guernsey sweater by Le Tricoteur. A high-quality knit that's just the ticket for typical winter weather in my region. I also enjoy the natural off-white color. The fit is very nice and it goes very well with my USN peacoat and German leather police jacket. An overall solid purchase that I look forward to wearing for years to come.

Now all I need is a watch cap like the one Jimmy Stewart wears in the photo above.

"Imported." Probably made in China. The Guideboat was made in England and is now on sale at $10 less than the Orvis version.

I'm really glad you like it. I love the color too as it looks "right" to me as some ivory or off-whites have too much yellow, this one is spot on. Enjoy. P.S. With the recent cold blast, mine's come in quite handy the last few days.

I really like the look of the Guideboat sub. I see they're made in England too - does anyone know if they produced under the Kempton / Outdoor Knitwear house? I haven't found a UK outlet yet and curious who would make them over here.

I don't think they're OKW/kemptpn - they have their own sub sweater; I've a feeling you own one of those yourself! I still wear my (very similar) Silverman's sub sweater, which I have had for many, many years.

Yesterday we ordered a small ivory Guideboat Submariner for super girlfriend - the extra 30% was the kicker, took it down to $84 - so the Fading Fasts are now almost all-in on Guideboat Submariners as I have the navy and ivory and SGF will soon have the ivory.

Thanks - I was just curious as it wasn't until I began looking into buying my own sub (ending up with one from ONW) that I discovered how many labels come from the same manufacturer (for instance Silvermans subs come from the same manufacturer as OKW - TW Kemptons - so are the same sweater)!

I've just acquired some vintage original Royal Navy issued submariner jerseys so will put up a post highlighting the diffferences I've found between high street and the 'real thing'!
