What is your favorite hat crease?

Use a piece of 1/4" or 5/16" cloth clothesline rope (not the nylon stuff). The smaller the diameter of the rope will produce a tighter gap. You might want to look at 3/16". I don't do tele's but I use 1/4" for tight crease lines. You only need about 6-8" lengths, you won't need a full circumference. Just work it around to complete the circumference pinching tight primarily from the inside of the crown. Just keep going around working to get everything round & smooth. If you pinch from the outside you will get some puckering. When satisfied just remove the rope & leave to try.

Wet the crown with hot distilled water until you get that putty like texture. When I get close to what I want I usually work my hats sitting on a glass carousal plate from an old microwave. You can turn it around without disturbing what you have. Leave to dry.

I wish I had your luck (and skill) but I'm cursed (to put it lightly) and these things never work easily for me. I'm all made backwards man, what comes easy to others is near impossible to me...and what's wacky hard for others I seem to do easily....most times, lol.
Luck and skill? What luck and skill? I'm terrible at those. I only though of a way to do it easily.
Must find the Stagecoach I did the process I tried to describe.

I think it was Hurricane Jack that keeps talking about a planter hat... so after I got a 3rd Resistol Stagecoach Turkey Creek in black, I decided to give it a go.

planter02.jpg

After I open crown the hat and wet it I did this
planter04.jpg

That ended like this (it's up to you how low you want to go) and let it dry.
planter03.jpg

After that I wet the "bowl" I made, put it on my head the right way up and with my fingers work it out.

End result on head

Nice job Joao. I was wanting to duplicate this planters hat & thought the Akubra Territory would be a good candidate for it. Never found a Territory so didn't get it done.

The second pic is just a model used to display the braided hatband.

Thank you. I believe I went too low for the crown but the proportions are there. Maybe a Woomera or a Sombrero can do one. More than 4" brim is needed for me.
Your's probably needs a narrower ribbon, then the crown height wouldn't look as low. The Territory is a 4" brim & the crown is a 4" precreased tele. The crown does have a bit of slope front & back to match the lines of the packer draw on the brim. But I always thought the Territory was the best candidate. I didn't want to buy a new one & you don't see many preowned come up for sale, especially in my size. So I eventually quit looking.

For me, the planter hat looks to have a 5" brim and a 3" crown.

Greetings All:
I thought i’d post up this before and after crease from a vintage Disney Camel Hair. The felt on this hat is soft and molds to whatever you care to give it. I steamed it to open crown. It suprised me how much more rigid it was after the steam. I then put a center crease in it for awhile then dry creased a diamond. I set the detail in the finished diamond with steam. Again, suprised how firm the hold.
So...before and afters.
Be well. Bowen

The grain and color of the felt in that topper remind me of the "Starry Night" painting...beautiful!

Finally was able to find & win a big Akubra Territory with two hats in mind for a conversion.

I've always admired this hat Tim made back under his Cane Rod Maker name. Sorry I don't recall if it was made for a Lounge member or not. I think the Territory is a good candidate. I'll see for sure when it gets here.

Always wanted to replicate this planters hat that pre-dates & was worn thru the Civil War by a General (Beauregard?) now in a museum. The more I have thought about it I think the crown would be too low for me to wear.

Yesterday's Stetson Vogue with a crease that changed as the day went along. It really started as a diamond with hard edges and then morphed.

Today's Adam Pacesetter with a light teardrop crease.

Best, Eric -

Wow, Resistol has self conforming sweatbands and apparently Adam has self creasing crowns.

That Stetson Vogue is really, really, something! Beautiful.....

Ok, I have this hat that was not recieving much love, even though the felt and color are simply wonderful, AND it is a thin ribbon OR clone......and I really like my thin ribbon hats. I grab it to go out the other day and the wife says: "I really don't like that one on you".....:rolleyes: Here is the offending hat!o_O
20180714_080348.jpg

Then after two days I have an epiphany....I.....yes, I .....really do not like it either!:rolleyes:
And NOW I know exactly why! It was the CREASE! As a rule, I do not like what is now often refered to as a "Cattleman/Rancher" crease......even the hand done ones are just too......well.........too sterile! Just like a factory pressed crease, they are just too perfect! Not to mention they seem to make ANY hat....dare I say it.....Western:eek:.
AND that is the general reaction of most anyone really......even when worn with the brim snapped down. SO........I went to work......and found the felt was so very nice I did THIS in less than 10 minutes......AND......get this......it is a DRY CREASE!:rolleyes::)
Now, BOTH my wife and I, like this hat!!:):):) As we SHOULD!:D
