What is your favorite hat crease?

I changed the crease on my navy Black Creek hat. The crown is a little lower than I’d like but it’s still good for me. Now all I need to do is some brushing and it will be ready for the head time.

I have posted before that I am working on trying different creases. I am sharing some recent different efforts.

Deliberately trying different creases has enabled me to break away from the very similar diamond crown looks I have been getting with the wide variety of hats that I have. Not all of my crowns need or benefit from a diamond or c - crease. The more that I learn about the history of each hat on my hat rack I see them trending to their original intended crease. Suprisingly many hats "find" their crease after some chores or a collision with a tree limb or the like will on an outside adventure. The morphing of the crease tends to be what I let the hat crown stay with. No use changing what circumstances dictate. I can only control what I can control.

I re-read and see myself rambling and putting a definition to a deliberate randomness this evening. Doesn't matter as I like the outcomes.

Best, Eric -

I’m not sure why you need/want a block. Blocks are made for...er...blocking hats, and it doesn’t seem that you want to block/re-block them so....

I bought a vintage heated “block” that is actually more of an inside crown iron that I use to remove creases, etc. You have to be careful not to cook the leather sweatband. Sometimes I use it cold and use a steam iron on the outside of the felt and the cold metal “block” as an anvil for the steam iron to press against. These heated “blocks” are still available on eBay.

With the liner removed, you can mist the inside of the crown felt and use the hot block to steam out the creases from the inside. A undersized crown iron is a benefit and my 21” iron/block works well with my 24+” hats. Care is required to not cook/damage the sweat.

I love the telescope.
The Roy Rogers "double telescope", the beautiful "teardrop telescope", and the "porkpie telescope".

All flat.

All of my hats will have their signature telescope crease. I just need to find some beaters to practice on...lol.

Not having a good go with the new resistol...
Previous occupant had a cattleman crease in it. I want it to telescope...but the cattleman makes it go back to having two big vagina lips in my friggin crown. Steamed it, rolled the dish in, rolled the sides fairly round and smooth, got the height right in the mirror, flattened the brim, but this bloody center....
It's really pissing me off and im trying REAL hard not to go get the shellac and be done with it.

I just don't know how to get the center portion to be round and stay round...it keeps moving to a square for some reason. And it won't stay elevated either. I put it on my head and push it out, it stays fine for 5 minutes then collapses back into the vagina lips...ugh.

Any advice?

I know you dig the telescope and it's your signature look, but in my experience I've found that sometimes old habits are hard to break and the hat does what it wants. You can't force it. I've tried a few different creases in my old beater Dobbs and it still wants to revert back to something a bit more wonky, so I've accepted to embrace it for what it is. Vintage hats seem to take on a life of their own.

Hey Dm:
Try Googling how to steam a telecope crease, or words to that effect. Then videos, i recall a great one by Kevin at one of the NY hatters doing one and it was perfect. Hope you can find it.
I think they may call him Kevin the Hatter and he is very very well known. Maybe at NY Hatters. Hard to remember.
