Well, your comment about the airplane invention made me think of people (individuals, groups, nations) that take the credit for things done by "one of them". I'm not saying that you were taking credit like this. It's just that your post reminded me that other folks sometimes do. For example, some people think that because their distant ancestors built pyramids and vast empires, then this makes the descendants somehow more special than the descendants of nomadic hut-dwellers. I mean, if my grandfather saved the world, why should I feel superior for it? Conversely, if my granddad were a beggar, why should I feel inferior for it?

Well I think most people take pride(National pride) in their national heroes... don't they?
I don't think people really take credit for their Heroes' actions though.

Pride in- not credit for.

Technically in 1870 a British citizen could not "emigrate" to a colony. Canadian citizenship was not legally recognized until 1947. Until then they were defined as British subjects and could move feely about the empire.

So technically he was living in Canada but not Canadian, British. As Canadians at that time were Canadians and also British. Confused?

If you ever want an interesting read pick up a copy of "How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe's Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything in It" One of the main points it made was most people with the will and ingenuity to better themselves left for the new world. It is these people that sculpted the new world. The slackers stayed where they were.
