Speaking of modern straw hats, I went to the Hat Store in Houston today looking for a hat that would cope with the rising heat and humidity here. I knew they are primarily a western hat store, having descended from the old American Hat Company, but it's where vmtrevino recently purchased the Dobbs Milan he's been wearing lately. Unfortunately there wasn't a straw hat I liked, but they had Premier Stratoliners in Silverbelly, in my size, in stock.

So.......

David, almost everything they had at the Hat Store was Shantung, also.

trevino--you're right, you can wear silverbelly felt in this weather, and it will stand up to a thundershower, too.
You're also right about Gary at the Hat Store. Really nice guy.

Nice Strat.
I think our compadre Matt D. must be having a very positive impact on the new hats they are turning out.
I hope the felt on that one is as nice as the felt of the Royal DeLuxe I picked up at the Hatco Outlet a few weeks back. The felt on it feels like some of the best vintage 40's and 50's I have handled. I would say 30's hats too but I'm not sure I have a lot of exposure to those.

How hard would it be NOT to pull the trigger on that one? How does the premiere compare to your vintage felts?

For me, I can't seem to get away from my Royal Deluxe Strat.

That's the right way to frame the question---I was there, the hat was there, and the thought of NOT buying it was far, far away.

The quality of the Premier Strats tends to vary. They aren't as good as most vintage felts but they are good hats for every day wear, allowing me to preserve the vintage hats. I'll be in the heat and humidity of south Texas a few more days and I'll be able to wear this hat and sweat in it and take it out in the rain and not worry that I'm shortening the life of the '50s Open Road I brought along.

I'm happy with the shape and easily creased felt of this one.

Good afternoon fellows. Wow, the hats being worn are grand! A huge variety worn by the diverse contributors. Cheers to all!

This morning I completed errands in a Filson Mackinaw jacket and vtg. Stratoliner. I was very comfortable in the nearly 40'F temps.

It has warmed up to almost 60'F this afternoon and a vtg. Lee Commentator (green felt) and a vtg. Pendleton Jacket (same era as the Lee fedora) have been my companions fighting the warmer strong breezes off the lake. My Lee fedora shows felt distortions that resulted from the surprise rain early afternoon. It will join other fedoras for some TLC steaming tomorrow.

Harv, welcome to our neck of the woods! Glad the sun's coming out for you. Enjoy your stay in Central PA.

And since the sun is out, and several loungers got their new Milan Stratoliners in this week, I thought I'd swap out the felt Strat for the Milan version.

This weather can be brutally hot and humid but the Strat can be quite fitting in it. Hope you enjoy the rest of your visit...

Nice assortment of hats and caps today, guys. :thumb:

After severe thunderstorms moved through the area. Still hot, humid and occasional showers.
