What Did You Drink Last Night?

James,

It works well for me too, although some recipes omit the Crème de Violette, which is similar to a "Casino", although from memory, a "Casino" has orange bitters included?

The Crème de Violette, can be tricky to obtain, but you definitely miss the taste, if it's not included.

Tonight, for a change, a couple of "Margaritas".

Cheers,

Danny O

It is nearly the same:
2 oz gin
1/4 tsp maraschino liqueur
1/4 tsp lemon juice
2 dashes orange bitters
1 cherry

The Aviation is quite a bit sweeter and better in my opinion. :D:cheers1:

I just got back from going out for my birthday, and I had my first martini (also my first US legal drink. Not that big of a deal after spending the summer in Italy, but oh well).

As to the martini, it was tanqueray, and I don't know the vermouth.

I loved the taste of the gin, but vermouth is not my favorite, although it does go well with the gin. I think a little less vermouth, more gin would suit me next time.

By the way, despite it being my 21st, that was actually my only drink. I win the moderation prize for my birthday.

You are very astute for the first martini. I don't much like vermouth myself. I add my vermouth with a mister if that give you an idea of how much vermouth I put in a martini. ;)

Close to our Casino, though I use Old Tom and 1/2 oz Maraschino. I do like the Aviation, but the Rothmann's Violette has been a little too cloying for us lately. The Casino is smooth and alcoholic. The Aviation just started to taste like a roll of Smarties. In it's defense we probably reached our limit a whole lot quicker by making Gaz Regan's Moonlights which have an entire 1/2 oz of the stuff. Oddly, Violette gets sweeter, but seems less floral in larger amounts.

Last night I was tired as hell and was looking forward to a nice Aperol Negroni when I got home. Problem was, I wasn't paying attention and grabbed the Rye instead of the Gin. Didn't turn out too badly. Definitely a mouthful of flavor. It could have been diluted a little more, but is worth playing around with.

1 oz Rye
1 oz Italian Vermouth
3/4 oz Aperol
Lemon Twist

I don't much like Negronis due to the campari and bitter taste. Aperol doesn't seem to be very different for me. [huh]

Agreed, Campari is just nasty. I also normally have a lot of trouble with bitter, but Campari has an additional cough syrup-like flavor I just can't stand. I've tried, and I can't find anything that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb for me. Aperol is a little less bitter and a bit sweeter, but has a nice orange flavor in place of the cough syrup. It works nicely with Carpano in the modified Negroni to make something that doesn't really taste like either. Doesn't mean I can drink the Aperol straight though. Yecch.

Started with a Fourth Regiment Cocktail and then finally got to try Gran Classico bitters in a Negroni. Very interesting. The bartender gave me a little straight sip and it tasted like a bit like a more floral Carpano Antica, or maybe Perucchi. Yes, very interesting, but I think I'll pass on it for home.

Being a "school night", tonight it was Twinings Ceylon and Oolong tea...............but then tomorrow is Friday, and the difficult choice between either a gin, vodka or bourbon based mix, has begun!
