I'm sure my girlfriend will love all your comments on my plus fours.

That is, because she made them for me.

They were a pair of trousers I bought from a recycling center. She shortened them and added leather bands on both ends. Works like a charm!

They are really comfy and a light fabric, great for summer!

Something I've been wondering about plus fours (since I'm going to be making a tweed pair shortly), does one wear the top of the socks over the bottom of the trouser legs, or are the buckles/buttons/velcro fastened over top of the socks?

Not to answer your question but-
a knit cuff, a la old time knickerbockers is a good solution, the sock over, or under conundrum isn't so much of a problem, although sock-under sounds best. The junction of sock and trouser will hopefully be hidden under the overhanging tweed. With a buckle/strap, or (god forbid)velcro, it would surely be awkward and overly bulky with the sock on top. But then, practicalities may override logic.

I love that suit and it's more amazing knowing how tall you are! I really appreciate the tie-less suit look too.
I'm sorry, but I couldn't DISAGREE more with the second sentence.
To me a suit without a tie is a gross sartorial incongruity.

Yes, that is one opinion.

Much more casual today while checking out the school's impressive record collection with a friend.

I should have added: as an alternative to what we all know and do regularly. To wear a 3-piece 30's suit and fedora without a tie is something you often see in street snapshots from the 30's. Or so has stuck in my head :)

Mine have the leather band sticking out the bottom of the trousers so I just put the socks on top of the band. Although I can also flip the band to the inside, so that it doesn't show, and the sock goes underneath, but I haven't found it necessary. It will work that way too, though.

I'm not sure it matters. To me it doesn't. The end result is the same.

Quick try to match something with my new sports coat, got it from a thrift store for 2€

indeedah.jpg

It's more orange than in the picture. It's got beige, brown and dark brown in the pattern. In the picture as if it's just two colors.

I was thinking of pairing the coat with a green argyle vest, plus fours, the cap, red bowtie with white piping and a natural white shirt.. We'll see.

Thanks! Although I found the colors perhaps even a bit too vibrant, so I tried another composition.. less disturbing colorwise.

Do you think it's better?

just different.. like it also.. Vibrant is not a bad thing, as long as it's not blinding ;)

Vibrant is certainly not bad, but I have to say that the second combination is much nicer in my opinion. I'm glad that there's another young well-dressed gentleman here as we seem to be rare in the world.

While I know velcro is frowned upon. I think the end result is what matters. Especially when the trousers you begin with aren't vintage ones and you've made them yourself in ten minutes.

Of course they would be much nicer if they had buckles or buttons. But in my opinion velcro works just as well. Plus buckles and buttons are much harder to make. I have experience :)

My plus fours look nice even though they have velcro. Right? I certainly think so.

And I remember seeing 40's knickerbockers with velcro.

And Mr. Alan, it's certainly nice to meet you :)
