It is pretty neat to see all the styles of jackets, leather and treatments, nods to historical significance and of course groundbreaking artistic flair. I know we all have our own tastes and respect that. I marvel at how some folks can pull off certain looks, whereas, I think folks would think I'm trying too hard trying to do so. Interesting enough, some of these hides as of late scream couch or sofa to me... anyone else have that thought or something similar? Again, we all see things differently... but I can't keep from chuckling when seeing certain hides etc

mygar,
I can’t say that any of the recent postings around here have made me think of couches or car seats, but I do know exactly what you are talking about.
When I got into this wild world of leather jackets near the end of 2015 I went to Johnson Leather just across the bay from me in San Francisco to talk to Alan about making me a custom jacket. By that point I had spent months here drooling over the postings of Aero jackets made from CXL horsehide and I wanted something similar. Unfortunately Alan did not have anything similar at that point in time and the only horsehide he had was a rather boring lightweight brownish burgundy hide. He showed it to me and the very first thought that crossed my mind was: “that’s couch leather!”

Some of the distressed CXL to me ... looks like what you would find in a south western furniture store.... however, some of the cool modern colored leathers scream Michael Jackson to me... Nothing wrong with either. In fact, when I see either i think... wow cool... but wait could I pull that look off?

I'm sure I remember reading Aero bought a batch vintage cordovan coloured hide once that was originally purchased by an upholsterer, so there is a crossover.

Well. In short: Yes and why would that be a problem.

Lost Worlds sells their horsehide for upholstery. Many websites that sell Horween CLX label it as either upholstery or shoe leather. In fact, almost all leathers at the thickness we wear jackets from are labeled as either of those two or something else and not as garment leather. Most supplier websites label exclusively sheepskin as garment leather. The fact that the leather we like is also used for upholstery doesn't make it a sofa leather in my books but rather a leather that can be used for numerous things, amongst them sofas or jackets. So I'd rather call it "sofa-or-jacket-leather".

I would love to have a CXL couch! Imagine how that would look after a few years...

I agree with you though, some leathers looks very couchy.
Battered tan to me looks like a hipster bar couch, some Vicenza batches look very much like couch leather too.

The first time I wore my cordovan Aero Highwayman on a ride, a friend of mine said, "That looks exactly like our couch in the den." A little while later her husband remarked, "We have a couch that same color." That was 8 or 9 years ago, and I had forgotten about it until I saw this thread.

I usually think many high end purse leathers would make fine jackets. Not sure if it's goat Dolce and Gabana uses, but if it's goat, it blows many of the goats here out of the park.

It really depends on the leather used, there are good and bad leathers used in both jackets and sofa. Ideally we would take the same approach we do selecting our jackets when choosing sofas, and let's not forget upholstery for chairs. if anything we likely use them much more :)

Since you brought it up, I'll toss in my 2cnts. As much as I love a good Vanson, there was a recent Thurston x Vanson jacket post w some new marbled leather and my first thought was Restoration Hardware Leather couch. Just my opinion. Same goes for beer, ice cream, art. Peoples individual reactions can vary greatly! So you're not alone Mygar.

I loved that bainbridge leather! But yeah I can see where some would not. A leather couch is something I would never entertain...especially with dogs in the house. Now a sherpa lined denim couch? That I could get behind!

Lol ... actually you came to mind as I think I saw you in blue CR... and man you rocked it. Now me, on other hand, I would probably get beat up in it haha! No, not to blow smoke, but I think you could pull virtually any style off. The rest of us not so lucky

Exact leather and my thoughts on it as well. As another mentioned, battered tan also. But yea we all have different tastes and can pull off looks that maybe others can't imo
