The School of Hard Knox

Got it cleaned up last night, steamed and creased. The outdoor photos are not representative. I had thought the natural light would capture the true color. These photos look brown or some type of neutral tone. In person, the color is closer to a dark forest green.

I'll make the obligatory date guess at early fifties. The size tag is square, the reorder tag is unfamiliar, and the taped sweatband has me a bit mystified.

Real nice, Jim. Knox sure made a fine lid.

Ahh, so you got this one. I too was confused by the features juxtaposition but was still watching. The tagging only adds to the mystery. I thought by the 50s HCA had standardized their tags. Good get, regardless, and especially so if it's forest green.

I didn’t find much of anything on this hat. It’s not as described in the ebay listing so it’s going back, but before I ship it back I thought I’d add it here in case someone else is interested at some point.

I suspect this is from the early to mid 1960s. The felt is not bad at all; it’s sort of a cross between a dress and western...just like an OR should be. The crown is softer than the brim and it easily takes a dry crease. The felt is thin and reasonably dense. The leather sweatband is supple and soft; although, it has been damaged on this particular hat. I’d buy another if the stars align.
5 1/2” open crown and 2 3/4” bound brim.

Seeing that it’s going to be returned, I didn’t do any shaping etc.:

There are so many truly horrible hats from this era, but this isn’t one of them. I recently acquired a 1960’s Stetson “Beaver 25” that was soooo much worse. I’d rate this similar to a late 1950’s Open Road: not among the nicer hats, but still pretty okay.

I missed it, why are you returning it?

It was sold as being in very good lightly used condition. The sweat has completely separated and there was significant moth damage. I used to see if the seller wanted to make a deal, but it just seemed like a scammer move that I stopped doing it.

Here is a MODERN Knox from 2014! Levine hats from St Louis licensed the name from HatCo and commissioned the "Dr. Knox" hat. Even produced little copper Knox hat pins! This in the color "Cognac" (a kind of light/medium copper brown) with 2" wide ribbon, open crown and 2 5/8" raw edge brim. Wonderful liner in red satin and white tip! Felt has a suede like finish.

OK, so I'm taking the plunge into homburgs in the next week. I'm picking up two Knox Superfine homburgs in a few days. They look 50s to me.

Wow! Two great hats to start with. I like homburgs with wider brims and your Knox are outstanding.
