The Official Stetson Nutria Quality Thread

I've petitioned the hat gods on your behalf. They've decided to give you a pass. This time!

So, all this has me wondering - exactly how fabulous is the nutria-quality felt? I've read those who say it's one of the higher qualities. But I'm not sure if that's just based on its toughness, or price, or what. Anyone have a strong opinion on where it lies in the whole Stetson "x" (or any other relevant) continuum?

Higher qualities I don't know, Stetson doesn't make those anymore but continues to make hats in bunny and beaver, so...
Overall it's different from beaver and bunny, some don't like it, some love it.
Where it lies o the X's... hard to say, Stetson made 1x Nutria, Clear Nutria, Real Nutria, Nutria... in contrast with the 3x beaver, 5x beaver, 7x clear beaver, No 1, etc etc etc

At the risk of a lightning bolt coming my way from the Hat Gods, you could also trim a wee bit off the brim and turn it into a fedora style - reblocking it like a Strat. Ducking under a table now...
I had that done to a Stetson western hat. It looks great! Who's afraid of the hat gods anyways? KABOOM! (NOTE TO READER: I now have a semblance to Wil E. Coyote of Roadrunner fame.)

Hey guys new here , hello to all .. I've just picked up my first stetson was having alot of trouble finding much of any info until i stumbled upon this thread so here she is .. Just looking for some more basic information for my own knowledge .. Seems from browsing this thread and some random info on the net that this is a early 1950's light tan nutria quality stetson never worn almost perfect condition .. Was wondering if anyone can help with the embossed information of
"From Texas lions 1950 " - I actually emailed me the store that it was origionally sold which is still open to see if they had any info havn't heard back as of yet .. Also wondering if anyone can put a value to it ?

Thanks Lex

This is your first Stetson? Way to start at the top and work your way down!

Welcome to the Lounge, Lex! I can't speak to the store or the value, but you have yourself one humdinger of a nice Stetson Nutria there!

And what is your opinion on it?
Good, bad...

Joao, I love the hat. It is not nearly as stiff as my other cowboy hats but holds it shape well. The felt is dense and thick but with a nice smooth hand. I think they're probably one of the toughest most durable cowboy hats made. I wish they still made them. Also, the liner is embroidered which I really like.

Also have one Nutria liner on one of my nutrias. Still thinking on moving it to the Real Nutria.
