Hey Dogman:
“Altered it a little”? Lol. Total modesty there! I see it’s the before pic from the Nutria thread i inquired about. Stunningly beautiful work my friend!! I don’t often solicit member’s post pics but damn Dude this hat beckoned my grovel!
I’ve now seen this exact hat with the embroidered Rider liner, 3 cord ribbon, 3”brim in Black, Choc Brown, Silverbelly/Tan, Pepto Bismol Pink, and now “Jealous” Green!! Anybody seen any other colors?
Thanks Dogman. Be well. Bowen

Liner doesn't match the sweat.

No factory tag visible. Liner is sewn in, but there's enough space between the sweat and liner that I doubt one is present.

Liner crest protector is thinner than I would expect on a hat from around 1960. Which is my guess of age. 5" ipen crown, 2" overwelt brim. 103g. Felt is very soft and malleable, and has a finish that almost feels like a short cropped velour.
Head shot:

Hope to find more of this nutria felt. Good stuff!

Just an educated guess, but I would say the liner is right and the sweat is wrong.......especially considering the hat style.;) Really nice hat though.......

Greetings All:
To liven up this thread, how about some color? I just recieved the Boss and was comparing them and thought you all might get a kick out of “The Rat Pack”. So here ya go. Upper left clockwise: Roper brown, Trooper blue, Italian expresso, Marine Green and Boss tan. Stetson’s all except the Italian (Borsa) it was lonely. Hope you all enjoyed
“The Rat Pack”.
Be well. Bowen

Boss Raw Edge with a ribbon binding? Any sense on what is original and what has been modified in the hat's later life?
Hey Alan: my thoughts exactly. I’ve only begun to check it out. No obvious work done to it. I was hoping to hear input from others as i’m no expert. I’ll see what other indicators i can find. Thank you for your input it’s always appreciated.
Be well. Bowen

When you have time, share some photos of the labels and marks behind the sweatband. It could have had some long ago modifications or perhaps it came from the Stetson factory that way. It's a cool hat - congratulations on scoring it.

Greetings All:
To add to the previous, some behind the sweat and edge ribbon pics. I don’t see any obvious evidence of repairs of odd stitching anywhere. Interpretations are most welcome.
Be well. Bowen.
PS: i’m feeling this one is a bit unusual. Always interesting, they are. B

Thanks for sharing the additional views... all consistent with early to mid 1930s. Jury is out on the brim binding and ribbon, but if they were modifications, they were done a long time ago. Maybe to citifi a traditional western. That 7" crown could have gone with a big curled brim. How wide is the brim now?

Greetings Alan et al:
I thought you had a few Alan, that’s sure a nice one. The brim on this one is 3.5” and the crown is 7”, which i didn’t realize. I’ve noticed a couple more interesting anomalies. I need to get out the magnifying glass first and look a little closer before i mention them.
I’m starting to wonder if it’s not a custom someone ordered but i don’t know if Stetson made some distinction with labels or branding if so. The detective work goes on.
Thanks. Be well. Bowen
