I used to do "camera shows" (my other favorite hobby). My trademark was a burgundy hat (fur felt, made in Italy. I had shaped it to look llike a Homburg, although it was actually a fedora.) I wore it for about twelve years. People were always complimenting it. Some even tried to buy it. But once, some guy said, " I remember you from last year, and I remember your GOOFY HAT, too! (No, it wasn't the one I'm wearing in my avatar.) He must have seen a hurt expression on my face, because he quickly added, "Or maybe you don't think it's goofy looking." He then moved on, in a big hurry. My consolation is that POSITIVE COMMENTS have always out-numbered the negatives.

Had a prof. comment on my 'costume' today. It was raining so I wore a hat and my M41 combat jacket over jeans and t-shirt. Costume?

I went to a baseball game a while back, and I decided to wear my Jaxon Iconoclast.

Apart from the usual, obnoxious Indiana Jones comments, I got one that I found a bit peculiar.

In the parking lot, a guy came speeding (probably 25mph) down the road directly in front me in an open chevy pickup. He glances at me as he goes past, then throws his head out the window and screams, "HI, HARRY!"

Then he started whooping like a drunken hillbilly and took off out of the parking lot.

...wth...

Another "Smoke Dope Much?" case.;) :p

"A college professor, open-minded educator of the masses, casting a jaundiced eye of judgment upon his pupils' self-expression through their manner of dress? REALLY, sir!"

...step back carefully, watch his head explode.

....hey, look! I'm the beast!

fatwoul, There are still a few camera shows left, not as many as ten years ago. Most items offered for sale were film cameras, both collectable and users. For a fair fee (now $75) you got the same size table as everyone else. On it you could offer cameras and accessories (anything photographic) for sale or trade; or you could just buy from the public (all of whom paid a nominal admission fee). I stopped being a vendor, because it was no longer profitable. I stll go and pay my admission fee, to add to my collection. Prices are about half what they were in 2000. If you would like to find one near you, try a search for "camera shows calendar" and "camera shows schedule." If you're near Grapevine, TX, there will be one in the Grapevine convention Center, September 8 & 9, 2007.

Following this thread, I wondered about those 'Indiana Jones' comments you guys in the US get. Apparently, that character is an enormous phenomenon in the US!

AFAIK, the hat(s) of Indiana Jones did not have a specific impact over here. I never encounter such references.

OTOH, the comments I get are even sillier. I am often called "cowboy"... wearing fedora's, that is... The clich?© here seems to be that hats are first and foremost worn in Western movies...

Received and interesting comment today. I was wearing a pair of Mountain Khakis, a polo shirt, my Alden 405's, and a beat up cheap Bailey Panama. A fellow hailed me in the parking lot, waved me over, and then said, 'I always wondered what Indie would have worn in really how weather.'

"Yep, and I always wondered what an idiot would say to Indy in a parking lot." ;) :p

Oh, I did not take offense at the comment. I just thought it was odd. More out of the blue than anything. Nothing but the shoes spoke of Indie; and I doubt that is what he was picking up on. I don't wear them for that reason anyway. They are just great shoes.

...It's amazing how the appearance of a simple article of clothing can shake people up.

Yeah, sight of a nice hat and they have expressions on their faces like in your avatar. :D

Not hat-related this time, is that okay?

I went to the local Goodwill store wearing a black double-breasted jacket. A man looking through racks of clothes jumped up and asked me if I was the manager.

I went to church wearing a cream colored three-piece and the man sitting in front of me asked if I had just come from the bank.

Among others...it's amazing how nowadays, some people will actually consider a suit out of place [huh]

Non-hat related is fine.
"Yeah, I came from the bank. I robbed it." :p

Well here's a new one on me...

...one of the guys in Sales keeps calling me "Cheech".

I finally asked him what he meant. He said in a straw hat I looked like Chi Chi Rodriquez!

Can ya top that?
