I got a new one the other day... Actually I've not had a name shouted at me in a couple years), I was headed out to dinner with my wife, I had on a linen sportcoat, vintage tie, panama hat and spectators and had a couple of "aging jocks" on vacation yell, "Hey its Dick Tracy!" Well, at least it wasn't "Al Capone" or "Indiana Jones"! ;)

Being new to wearing hats, I can look forward to many dumb comments. But right now I am limited to just one. Ever since my manager saw me wearing a straw fedora he keeps making zoot suit comments/jokes. I wasn't wearing a zoot suit, just a blue blazer and brown slacks. I don't even own a zoot suit. Just seeing me in a hat is so outrageous to him that he thinks zoot suit. :eusa_doh:

Yep, best to steel yourself. But try to laugh when you get the ones that really don't make any sense...

I ran into a co-worker once at the opera and since I was wearing a suit and fedora I was "Wow, all gangsta, just like in the Sopranos." Hmm, I really don't look anything like James Gandofini and he didn't wear a hat in the show... hmm...

You need to print out a picture of the worst or most outrageous zoot suit you can find and put it on his desk with a question on the picture, "Do you really think I look like this?"

Someone called my Indy while I was wearing THIS:

FedoraCaughtInRain.jpg

In case you can't tell, that is an Akubra Squatter hat in Willow GREEN.
Granted, it's a fedora and it has a center dent, but come on, it's freakin' GREEN. Combined with the green jacket, I'd say that it's not so much a dumb comment as it is the best a dumb person could come up with.

Once again, I must reiterate how confused I am that this fool came to the conclusion that I was an Indy impersonator while wearing a rainjacket and a GREEN FEDORA.

Gatwick Airport, late '80s: I was wearing a broad, black fedora that was my travel hat, gray sport coat, white button down shirt...and blue jeans. A man with a thick New York City accent asks me "Are you Jewish? You got the look of a Jew about you."
This guy realizes that his question sounds odd, explains that he himself is Jewish. Then asks again if I'm Jewish--because of the hat (I think). Perhaps maybe he saw similar hats on Hasidim in NYC (except they don't wear gray coats or jeans)? The hat was the only difference between my dress and any other traveling university student. I still don't quite know what he meant. Also, physically, I resemble my Korean mother...

Neo, I've gotten the Indy comment while wearing a cheap Bailey straw, navy blazer and a tie.
It can be summed up in "Mav's 1st Law of Humanity:"

People. Are. Stupid.

This article isn't completely on- topic, but it might make you feel better:

so i took my fedora for a night out for the first time, it was mostly well recieved. My friends claimed i looked like "an aussie" oh and indiana jones of course. The only jerkish comment was from a bouncer, i was pretty inebriated but i did hear him compare me to ray mears... which was weird since he doesnt really wear a hat.. I just laughed it off.. in his face.
