Nice work Trout.....

They look pretty thick, are they? [huh]

I have my eye out for a white western that I can convert, but I don't wanna pay an arm and a leg either, for a conversion. :D

Thanks for the compliments from all. It was fun doing them.

Yes the black Resistol is very thick. It is a 5X. The light gray Resistol is not nearly as thick, it is a 4X. The Shudde Bros., which I think is mostly beaver if not all beaver, is very thin. I like the Resistols because they feel like they will be extremely durable hats that I won't have to baby. That's what I was hpoing for. The Shudde Bros has a very good "hand" , almost as good as my VS. I just did a quick eyeball comparison between the black Resistol and my VS. The Resistol is almost twice as thick and quite stiff, but I don't really mind that.

This time I'm in the right place

Here are my three

L to R a Shudde Bros. custom, a Resistol 5X, a Resistol 4X. Sorry, no before pics of the light colored hats. The Shudde Bros. I've posted before, Kahki with a forrest green ribbon;

The Black resistol before

And after. I had to shrink this one about 3/4 of a size. It took some doing but I'm happy with the result. Black on black;

My wet weekend endeavors...

No where in the league with Warmentrout above but I took a hat that I all but forgot about & got it to something I will & do wear around the ranch at least. It is a Statesman from Australia, in a Snowy River type style with a 3 1/4" brim...

I cut the brim down to 2 3/4", added a 2 ply thin ribbon of course and adjusted the crease by raising the pinch & elongating the side dents...

state7.jpg

state8.jpg

The changes are subtle but enough to get the lid out of a box & on my head, even if to muck out stalls!

Warmentrout, Good work. You've taken three westerns and created some nice-looking heavyweight dress fedoras. I'd like to see those being worn.

gtd, I like what you did with the Statesman. It retains a western flair while adding some thin-ribbon panache. Let's see this one on your noggin!

I like the looks of this hat. You made a wearable and useful lid.

How do I create a link here to a post I did somewhere else on the FL ?

You can copy a post from another thread, if you made the post.
Sign in. Go to the post you want to copy. Click on "edit" at the bottom right of the post. When the screen comes up, drag over the entire post, so that everything is highlighted. Do a right click, and click on "copy." Then go to the thread you want to put the post in. Click on "reply." When the blank screen comes up, right click and click on "paste." You can then add or delete as you like, and then submit the post. :)

Thanks for the compliment. Yours looks great too. I wish mine were as high a quality felt as yours.

Carter, thanks for the encouragement.

My first western conversion

Inspired by others on this thread, I picked up the following from ebay a little while ago with a view to using it as my first "project" hat.

It arrived like this:

After soaking for a good 10 minutes it was just about soft enough to shape the crown and the brim (managed to get the lift at the back by placing it in the bath):

Now after trimming the brim down to about 2 3/4" (haven't sanded it yet) and adding a charcoal ribbon of 15/16", I have:

Thanks,

Bill

Nicely done, Billy. Once you get the brim sanded, it'll look even better. I'd like to see the hat with a slightly wider ribbon, however, this one looks very good.

Thanks gtd & carter.
I wanted a wider ribbon, but the colours I had in wider didn't quite work, they weren't the colour they looked on ebay... I am waiting for more vintage ribbon to arrive (purchased off ebay), so may swap it out - not quite happy with the "bow".

Major Moore resistol conversion

I received this from Major Moore today and have already been complemented on having a dandy of a hat.
