Great look ... :eusa_clap

I think if I can't afford a Fawcett original next time I just can't resist a new hat, I am going with the Stylemaster. Every pic I have seen gives it a look very similar to my Akubra Fedora (2.5" brim, not an "extra" tall crown, maybe just the slightest taper) and the Fedora seems to suit my face better than any other hat I have. In fact, I'd just order another Fedora if I could get the wider range of colors.

A good first choice. In your profession, you likely didn't want to go too far "out there." The crown height and style just work, and it's a good color. What were the rule-outs?

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies!

My hat choices, untill now, have been along the lines of "outdoor fedoras", for want of a better term. You know, hats that go better with canvas barn jackets than with Harris Tweed. My Stetson Gun Club and my old Quaker Marine Mountain Walker fall squarely into this category. In the past, I've also occasionally worn "cowboyish" hats such as my Open Road. The Stylemaster is my first foray into dress lids.

I decided to buy a dressier hat some months ago when I began browsing some of our threads here. I was especially taken by the vintage Stetsons our members frequently discuss. The Stratoliner and the Playboy particularly caught my eye. Sadly, though, vintage is seldom a choice for me because of my size 7 3/4 punkin' head. Instead, I began looking at new Stetsons, the Lodi and the McBride being my first two choices.

I was about to pull the tigger on a new Stetson when, on a whim, I bought an Akubra Snowy River off of e-bay. A new door suddenly opened in my tiny little hat world. Stetson was not the only hat maker in the universe? Not only that, Akubra seemed well liked by some of FL's members who's opinions I greatly respect. In fact, although they weren't pushy about it, they seemed to like new Akubras more than new Stetsons.

Then Donato bought his Stylemaster and posted photos of it on the Lounge. What a great looking hat! Lower crown. Finished brim. Wide ribbon. It was exactly what I was looking for. The scale tipped away from Stetson and, now, I'm happily wearing my second Akubra.

But I may sill order that McBride. ;)

Special order?

Atticus - Congratulations on moving into dress lids, they're the best and I think they often look good with casual clothes. I like the Stylemaster on you quite a bit, but was trying not to get too interested, as the ads for it I've seen list 7-5/8 as the max size. But you say you are 7-3/4 like me, so did you special order the hat or does someone actually stock that size? The hat you're wearing is exactly what I'm looking for at the moment - which color is it? This hat is making me regret buying a Stetson in January. Thanks, Carl

PS - I agree that the hat looks much better in your photos than in any of the tiny web photos of the Akubra retailers - they should be buying your photos...

Your whole look is stylish Atticus. The Stylemaster tops it off nicely! (Literally! lol Ah, I'm so funny on a Monday . . .)

Carldelo is right, you ought to be Akubra's hat model!

Hi Carl,

My new Stylemaster is a size 7 5/8. I am actually a "betweenie" when it comes to hat size. In vintage hats, I have found that I need to buy 7 3/4 to be safe. I sometimes have to pad the sides, but in my opinion, that is much better that trying to live with a hat that is too snug. In new hats, I'm usually OK with a 7 5/8, but I have a hat stretcher just in case. Also, I think Akubras run a tad large. This one fit very well right out of the box.

By the way, the color is "Acorn Fawn". So far, it has complimented every dress jacket I've worn with it.

You guys with tiny heads just give me fits... :rage: :D OK, just kidding.
If I ever find a vintage hat in my size, I plan to just go ahead and buy it no matter what it looks like, just to see what it's like. At least I have the picture of you in the Stylemaster to reference when ordering my custom version of that lid...

Cheers, Carl

Hi All,

Carl, this is where I purchased my Stylemaster. I think they sell it in 64 Cm, but that size will take three months to back order. Frankly, I think the hat would be worth whatever time it takes to get one. Heck, in two months it'll Panama weather in this hemisphere, anyhow. The Stylemaster would be something you could look forward to wearing on the first cool day of October, '08!

Atticus - I looked on australiangear.com after your post but the size of the Stylemaster stopped at 61 so I gave up. Then I figured you must have seen it somewhere, so after a search I finally found the larger sizes on everythingaustralian.com. Up to size 64 is available with the 3-month wait as well as the mid-brown color. Now I'm really torn, as I had mentally given up on the Akubra and have been planning my first custom, a brown 40s Playboy-style lid. Now that the Akubra is available on a similar time frame, I'm not sure what I'll do. As you rightly point out, summer is just around the corner - decisions, decisions....

Cheers, Carl

Atticus: great look- never thought that hat had such panache...

and those shades! "Clubmaster" ?? can you tell me who makes/made them,
and if they are available anywhere? Been looking for a new pair, and those
are the ones I want. You know it when you see it.

Put the combination hat & glasses together- one for the books. Great look!
