Sorry; the other bidder was me. New to the FL, and new to ebay. Not trying to bid you up, trying to get an awesome hat at a bargain price. Will continue to "lurk" in the FL, and hopefully get used to ebay that I may score a great vintage hat also.

Happy wearing!

RC
Welcome to the Lounge rcinlv!! Don't lurk, jump right in.

I would think that hat must be one of the earliest stratoliners which stetson made. Its true worth is much more than you paid, Douglas. It's a piece of history.

And, oh yeah, that's one awesome bash. I would like to replicate that in my new stratoliner if possible. Please tell us of the dimension when you get it.

I'm quite sure you'll have a grin from ear to ear again with this one!:D :D :D

Is the suggestion that the other bidder is perhaps a friend/price helper of the seller?

My goodness, Baron -- how devious! How suspicious! Funny, but that was the first thought to cross my mind! I then understood why some sellers will not accept bids from people with little or no feedback.
Needless to say, as the seller of this hat, I was quite relieved to read RC's post this morning!! Just for the record, he and I are not in cahoots, and we don't know one another (as far as I can tell).
As for the moth divots and sweatband wear -- please note, "Money back (less s/h) for any reason, within ten days; full refund my for misdescription." And, in this case, there AIN'T no "s/h,", 'cause I'm simply handing the hat off to Douglas (with a cash refund of the s/h he paid).
And a note to RC -- be patient and vigilant! Eventually, a ten-dollar bid will snag that perfect hat that no one else noticed!

Okay, I finally "won" a hat

on that God-forsaken auction website. A Borsalino. When it arrives, I'll start a thread of my own to "introduce myself" to the FL.

Thanks for the kind words, encouragement, and welcome. Glad to have found this site... Next I have to find a proper avitar and figue out how to place it in my profile!!!

Congratulations! The Borsalino Alessandria is almost a Stratoliner -- the difference being (from what I've seen) is that the crown of the Borsalino is tapered slightly. It's a great hat, and virtually indestructible -- you'll love it. And, BTW, I see you won one in a size 7. Borsalino's can be stretched successfully up a size or two.

Well I recieved my Stratoliner from Aliados on Monday as planned. Aliados was dress to the teeth with a green Stratoliner and a green three piece suit to match (pocket watch included). After a brief exchange of hat and pleasantries and change I left.He is a very pleasant fellow and I was very happy to pick it up in person as that does not happen often.

Is the hat new NO. Is the hat well worn YES. Is is perfect NO. Is it in terrible condition NO. IT is however extremely comfortable and broken -in and soft. It is also a great color and since it is not pristine I have no problem wearing it often. The sweat also is well attached. As far as the moth bites they seem to me to be only surface nips.
This is a really good hat. I can see why they were and are still popular.

Remember to use the other sticker when reordering.

Where's a pic of you and Aliados together? You must have cut quite a figure, the pair of you. (Figures? [huh] )

Actually, I rarely offer personal comments, but I was quite impressed with Douglas' attire -- NICE fabric on that vest & jacket, douglas, and a KILLER light gray Borsalino!

My picture is available in most post offices . . .

And yes, I DO have one in 7-3/8 long oval, medium gray. It was my frist eBay fedora, and I must say, I was bitterly disappointed when it arrived. Opened, the box, and there's this lopsided blob of limp gray felt . . .

Funny thing, though (and this is why I say I grow into hats) -- somehow, through wearing it, it came to fit me (and me, it, IMHO), and evolved into a perfect shape. Even were I not so attached to it, it would not be for sale, though, as it has sprung a couple of leaks (the felt is worn through at both rear corners).

I still don't understand why that hat fits me, and my 7-1/4 Open Road falls down over my ears!

And, as long as I'm posting, I may as well mentiont that I was torn between getting the Akubra Squatter in Deep Fawn now, or waiting three months for a gray one, and lo and behold, a gray in my size came up on eBay with a BuyItNow option! Looks to me as though the Akubra Campdrift is an Open Road/Stratoliner, and the Squatter is a Whippet. I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks . . .

Anyhow, I must say that it was a pleasure meeting Douglas in person, even for so brief a time. Seems to be a helluva nice guy (I had to insist that he accept a refund on the delivery charge)!

Later.

Must be really nice for the two of you to meet each other. With the amount of travelling that i have to do, I have yet to encounter a person who is as passionate as I am about vintage hats. Most of my friends give me funny face when I mention this. I wish I would be able to take some time off and set a date with someone nearby like the two of you did. Douglas, looking at your strat makes me so eager to get mine. It has yet to arrive in the mailbox. I wonder how much different Stratoliners evolved through the years.

Charlie, did Douglas smile when he saw the hat?

All the best to both of you!

I may have cracked a bit Astaire;)We didn't spend all that much time but it nice to connect a face with items. When you've bought so many things on line for so long you can forget that your not buying from a vending machine. The personal hand off brings it back to a human level.
