Last one was a big black and white dragon -- took seven hours...

Thanks for showing your tattoos! I especially enjoy the old school ones. Hm, come to think of it I have a tiny one myself, I wonder if it would pass as traditional?..

How much do you tip an artist?

I don't know how the whole thing works. I have two small ones and kind of guessed hoping not to piss the guys off. How much $ does the house take? How much is left for the artist? How much do you tip then? And if its the owner do you still tip? That would seem dumb.
What's a normal hourly for a good artist?
Thanks guys

$200+ an hour is about standard for the really good guys. The shop will usually take between 40 and 60% of that.

Tip whatever you feel comfortable - I usually take gifts (toys, booze) rather than cash tip, but that's because I know all my artists well...

Here is one of mine that was based off a sketch I did. The larger image is of Billie Hioliday. The smaller images at the bottom are stevie wonder's glasses, lauryn hill's dreadlocks, nina simone's headwrap, and marvin gaye's beanie

Bump!

Finally got this done and thought I'd share. This was done in one sitting but at my artist's request I am going back for some touching up. The photograph below was taken 2 days after my appointment, today is day 9 and I've entered that itchy stage  .
I have really enjoyed looking at everyone's ink, some fantastic work here!

This is really nice.

I've been wanting a tattoo for a year. I know the design I want but I don't know if its soething I want to do for sure yet. I'm going to wait another year or so and if I still want it then and I can afford it then I will get it.

Waiting sounds like a good plan. I've had this design sitting on my desk for over a year and I knew for about six years I wanted to get this hip done (I have another tattoo on my other hip). For me it was looking at this design on a daily basis and finally actually having a little money that made me decide to do it when I did and I still feel like I rushed into it. [huh]

Thanks to Lefty, Gutshot, Sam and to you too, JennyLou, for your compliments (and applause lol)

I've got two big factors right now, career, and money that have put off me getting my tattoos. My dad has 4 and my mom has 3, so they're no big deal around here, and my folks really want me to get a couple. So, I decided that on each forearm, I want a pinup girl, but I'm waiting to see what I'm doing as a career. Hopefully I'm going to take over the family gun store and it'll be no biggy, but I may get into a more office-situated job that will look down on my tattoos. Sometimes life just throws you the ol' curveball I guess.

and you are a wise wise young man for waiting.

This would be the reason i only have one and its on my back.....because I might yet switch to a more conservative company that -cares- about such things...

And while only putting the pretty things where they are covered at even the most conservative job, might make me a sell-out to 'the man', I am an employed and employable sell out...... ;)

And now....since Lefty will come slap me upside the head for provoking debate in this thread......I shall distract and show mine, despite it being in the -other- thread somewhere...and a -really- old picture....taken when it was new...Done by the mistress of celtic knotwork Pat Fish....I had her picked out as the artist I wanted for oh 10 years before I got over my fear of pain....and gave it to myself as a 31st birthday present.

Next I want a firebird.....but gonna be ages til I can do it.

Since its really hard to take pictures of your own back, you get two...one to see the placement and color...and another one for close up of the shading...which is off center and thus not the whole thing.

There's so much cultural/religious loading for me getting a tattoo that as much as I like them, I'm going to wait a few more years and make sure I won't regret the repercussions with my family and whatnot.

oh trust me....I erm hid mine from my mother for a month before -emailing- her about it...with the 'unless you ask me, you will never see it' statement..and she has seen it and hates it. I also -waited- until I did not live in her house anymore so that i was not disrespecting her.

I wear turtlenecks to Thanksgiving and other family holidays (thank goodness they are all in winter!) so that no one else in family even has a -chance- at seeing it.....because all hell would break loose...and they would blame -my mother- for it....despite the fact I am 38....

so yea.....

This is the tattoo I've been wanting for more than a year. I'm going to wait at least a year before I get it. Also, I'm going to have it put on top of my right foot. I heard thats one of the more painful areas to get it but I don't know where else to put it.

Although I'm not sure if I'll keep the Japanese characters or not.
