I don't know exactly where that line between "Fedora" and "Trilby" exists myself. All other things being equal, some say it's a Fedora if the brim is 2.5" or wider and a Trilby if the brim is under 2.5", but I don't know how "official" that is. Even modern vendors often list hats with 2" brims as Fedoras. And there's a thread here on The Lounge that attempts to answer that question, but the responses are different and somewhat open to interpretation so it seems to boil down to "I know it when I see it."
To muddy the waters even more, or British friends call a "fedora," even those with a three inch brim, a trilby. Zombie is right, there is a difference and you'll know it when you see it.

Here's my find from my trip to the Episode store in Copenhagen. I didn't even come close to Stefan's 9 in Amsterdam, but I'm still pleased with it [emoji5]. A Resistol, made under license in Germany, grey fedora. I cleaned it up and gave it a steaming. Turned out okay.

I particularly like the bow on the sweatband and the wide ribbon. It's nearly 5cm. It also has a Don Draper/Mad Men look to it, which I like.

No idea of age. 60's perhaps?

So I made a hat for Jarrod Dickenson, this is a rabbit Fur Felt in Alabaster which was blocked on a 6 inch open crown block with a 3 inch brim. I used a 15mm cotton and rayon ribbon from the 1930's which just stood out on this hat. dropped it off last night at one of his gigs and lets just say he is a very happy Texan.
