To muddy the waters even more, or British friends call a "fedora," even those with a three inch brim, a trilby. Zombie is right, there is a difference and you'll know it when you see it.I don't know exactly where that line between "Fedora" and "Trilby" exists myself. All other things being equal, some say it's a Fedora if the brim is 2.5" or wider and a Trilby if the brim is under 2.5", but I don't know how "official" that is. Even modern vendors often list hats with 2" brims as Fedoras. And there's a thread here on The Lounge that attempts to answer that question, but the responses are different and somewhat open to interpretation so it seems to boil down to "I know it when I see it."
