Penney's Marathon. 2.5" brim, 4.5" to the pinch, bound edge and a sort of stitched ribbon.

The felt is stiffer than the brown Marathon I have, despite having "Custom Quality" on the sweat, and also lacks a wind trolley which the brown one has but was quite a good price on the auction site. A little tight, but will hopefully adjust.

Thanks Steffan. The brim is actually quite normal size. I think it's the angle I took the photo at that makes it look "stingy"...
"Normal" is in the eye of the beholder. It could be the angle, but I'd be surprised to hear the brim is even 2-1/4" wide (which many of us would consider "stingy"); I'd guess closer to 2". Regardless, it looks like it's in very good condition and an excellent find!

I'd kinda sworn off buying any more hats for awhile, but then I came across this Dobbs for $25 and couldn't help myself. I think this one is from their Golden Coach line. It has a felted edge and is super thin and lightweight.

Never say never Dale! I have a cousin to this hat. Per the Professor's website, the trademark symbol with the golden coach puts this one post 1972. So it is probably a 40 year old sweetie. Nice.

I have sworn off buying stingies because I rarely wear them anymore (mostly under an umbrella these days) but I still have a weakness for those little felted edge ones. Looks good!

Thanks Red, and thanks for the dating info. I figured this was late 60s or 70s from the extra stinginess of the brim.

Thanks Moe. I still wear the stingies a lot, since I have so many, but I've been on kind of a western kick lately. Straw cowboy hats are great for summertime, and there's still plenty of summertime left down here.

Thank you, Zombie. Interesting comment about a "stingy" brim. I always thought it referred to a Trilby brim. Is there a different US/European understanding re brim widths? Most of mine are about the 2 inch mark, but I don't think of them as "stingy".

I don't know exactly where that line between "Fedora" and "Trilby" exists myself. All other things being equal, some say it's a Fedora if the brim is 2.5" or wider and a Trilby if the brim is under 2.5", but I don't know how "official" that is. Even modern vendors often list hats with 2" brims as Fedoras. And there's a thread here on The Lounge that attempts to answer that question, but the responses are different and somewhat open to interpretation so it seems to boil down to "I know it when I see it."

It's tough to turn down an otherwise perfect hat just because the brim is on the stingy side. That's also how I ended up with so many wonderful hats that I never wear. I try to exercise restraint, but I'll admit I have a weakness (disease?).
